BREWERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Mr Troy E. Christopher, the son of the late legislator Deloris Christopher, will make a run for the Second District seat in the 2023 general elections.

Mr Christopher, a former partner in Japhix TV, is a local businessman and political activist.

Speaking to our newsroom today, March 9, 2023, Mr Christopher confirmed he is a candidate for the Second District but discussions with his Committee and his supporters need to be had on whether he will contest as an Independent candidate or join a political party.

Mr Christopher said many persons seem to be in favour of him running as an Independent candidate; however, political parties have also expressed an interest in him running on their slate.

The D2 candidate was last registered with the National Democratic Party (NDP) as a member.

Independent or not, Mr Christopher will be coming up against incumbent Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Hon Melvin M. Turnbull (R2). Hon Turnbull of the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) is seeking a third term, having been first elected in 2015.

Is running as an Independent wise?

The last time an Independent candidate won an election in the Virgin Islands was Mr Troy E. Christopher’s uncle J. Alvin Christopher, who won in 1995 as an Independent but then joined the Virgin Islands Party. Since then no other person has won an election as an Independent candidate.

Chad C. George in District 1, Perline R. Scatliffe-Leonard in District 7 and Lesmore Smith (At-Large) are the declared Independent candidates so far.

I think it would be beneficial for this candidate to align himself with a party. He may get more support than running under the independent status.

@Tis Best. I’m in total agreement with you. Generally independent candidates do not make an impact. I think the wise choice for him is to associate himself with a political party

Why is this dude running in D2? He lives in D5 wher his mother {god rest her soul} controlled for 2 terms. His chances are better there in D5.

You don't even know him, he lives in the second district, he is the son of Robert Christopher and Delores Christopher (may her soul rest in peace). The Christophers are from Mt. Healthy. The mill at Mt. Healthy had belong to his grandparents before they gave it to the government.

it doesn't matter where you live. it's a matter where your are registered to vote. Can live east end for years for year still registered and vote in the 1st. And also, once done before election deadlines for registration of first time voters and amendments to one's voting district. One easily change their location of voting unaware to others.

many of you bloggers don't even properly think about things before you come on and comment.

I always voted for Miitch but Troy has my vote. I am tired of the arrogance and untruthful behavior of Mitch. He thinks he is unbeatable and trys to intimidate anyone that challenges him.

I usually do not support independent candidates but it says a lot that he did not join the NDP so for that alone he has my vote. He is a true patriot and what the BVI needs now.

Contesting elections as an Independent knowing full well how the voting population here operates is just a waste of time, yours and the people. If you win as an independent and you want to get work done you still have to 'pick a side' so to speak. Until our system of Government changes, there's no such thing as 'Independent'.

If there are enough independents they can possibly sway votes one way or the other way.

Do not forget how bad the NDP treated your mother and how they lied to her on many issues while they were giving away the country to their rich UK friends especially after Irma. Stay far from the NDP.

Troy is no J. Alvin Christopher for sure and as VINO stated independent candidates have not won an election over the years. Not saying it isn’t possible. Dancia ran twice as an independent candidate and lost. Plus if VIP and NDP put a candidate in the race it will be an easy win for Mitch. The HOA is dissolving in a few days. The question is when is Election Day? Will he have enough time as a newcomer to convince the voters why they should vote for him and not Mitch. Troy will have a lot of convincing the people why they should vote for him instead of Mitch. If the second district vote for Troy what can he do for the people as he is a one man show and seven is needed to form the government. Waiting for some answers.

I have found Mitch to be a guy that is power hungry and would do anything and say anything to get power. He has a track record of trying to destroy persons with gossip and call it facts and he is always portraying himself as the victim. Enough of him as far as I am concern. MY FAMILY & I WILL BE VOTING FOR TROY THIS TIME.

I hope he understands how frustrated we landowners in District 2 are with our current representative and his indifference to our problems. To win he needs to BE our rep first and foremost; should he become a minister we must remain his first priority.
I have a lot of respect for his uncle and hope Troy will be as open to dialog as Alvin.
