Troy Christopher appointed new Chairman of Taxi & Livery Commission
According to information reaching Virgin Islands News Online from its team of reporters and sources within the National Democratic Party (NDP) Administration, Cabinet a few weeks ago approved the appointment of businessman and indigenous Virgin Islander Troy Christopher.
Mr Christopher has already received his appointment letter from the Ministry of Communications and Works.
Role of a Chairman of Taxi & Livery Commission
The role of the Chairman of the Taxi and Livery Commission is to oversee the taxi industry and the general aspects of the Road Traffic (Taxi Cab) Amendment Act, which came into effect in 2010.
The powers of the Commission includes working with the Director in carrying out safety inspections; removing any vehicle for hire found to be operating in an unsafe manner; monitoring authorized taxi stands and ports to ensure compliance with regulations; and otherwise enforcing regulations through the Director.
The Taxi and Livery Commission, beside Mr. Christopher, is made up of a representative from taxi operators on Tortola; taxi operators from the sister islands; and a representative of the livery services in the Territory.
Ex-officio members include the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works; the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV); and the Directors of the BVI Tourist Board and the BVI Ports Authority.
Mr Christopher is the son of Fifth District representative Honourable Deloris Christopher and is also a media businessman with interest in local television station JTV.
The day to day operations of the Taxi and Livery Commission is run by a Director, Dameon Percival, a former NDP youth activist who was appointed in July 2012.
Mr Percival’s appointment drew sharp public protest from former Chairman Marvin Blyden as he was not the recommendation of the Commission.

I admire that MB did the honorable thing and resigned. More should do that!
