ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) launched this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (“WTISD”) celebration under the theme:- “Bridging the Generational Divide.”

According to a press release from the TRC, this year’s event was targeted to help seniors adapt to technology while connecting with friends and family through our Scavenger Hunt.

The trivia questions were crafted in a unique way that allowed only the seniors to guess the answers and the other activities, involving technology, required the assistance of a younger family member or friend.

The event was hosted by the Commission in observance of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day which is observed globally on May 17 and is intended to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.

Scavenger Hunt

Residents of the Virgin Islands had the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and creativity during the Scavenger hunt. Entrants were expected to create teams of two individuals with each team consisting of one senior. The teams were required to take pictures, solve clues, and answer trivia for a chance to win prizes.

The Commission concluded its commemoration of WTISD with an awards ceremony on July 17, 2022. Chief Executive Officer Mr Guy L. Malone congratulated the winners and stated that the commission has started a chain reaction with the Scavenger Hunt.

“The commission extends its gratitude to our esteemed winners for your participation, for without your support this would not be possible. The Scavenger Hunt focused on dedication and hard work and a desire to Bridge the Generational Divide,” Mr Malone said.

Winners

The successful winners are: 1st Prize – Laverne Varlack and Kia Soares; 2nd Prize – Anthony and Ronisha Williams; 3rd Prize – Wilford and Tasha Todman.

Prizes included cash, staycations, tablets for all seniors, supermarket vouchers, phones with unlimited phone plans.

TRC's office supervisor and organiser of the event, Ms Johanna Rhymer stated that there will be more community-minded outreach initiatives.

“Seniors are more likely to struggle with technology making it difficult for them to learn about it. This year’s event kept our seniors in mind as we introduced technology in many fun ways while connecting with loved ones.”

Ms Rhymer extends a hearty thank you to all winners and participants and encourages the public to look out for future events from the Commission.
