ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Work on improving the capital city, Road Town, will begin on the ground soon, Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture Honourable Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4) has said in assuring the people of the Virgin Islands (VI) that the promise made will be kept.

Hon Hodge-Smith was replying to a question during The Virgin Islands Voice on June 11, 2025, when she was asked about an update on the project to improve Road Town and concerns that nothing is happening.

“I understand the concerns of the citizens and rightfully so, they have a right to express themselves because it seems as if it’s a daunting situation that no progress is going to be made but rest assured residents, citizens, that all efforts are being made to address these issues and they will be seeing a transformation of Road Town very soon.”

The Junior Minister said work is being done behind the scenes, revealing that just one day prior, on June 10, 2025, a meeting about the Road Town Development Project was held.

Public consultations next week

On April 4, 2025, the Road Town Partnership (RTP) was launched. The RTP is a public-private initiative aimed at transforming the capital into a model of coordinated urban development and sustainable infrastructure.

Hon Hodge-Smith said the team will be meeting with the public on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

“We will be coming to the public with our ideas, and so get even further ideas from the public in terms of what they would like to see in the transformation of Road Town.”

Three projects slated to begin soon

Meanwhile, the minister said three projects in Road Town will begin soon. These are the sidewalks on de Castro Street, the refurbishing of the roundabout in Road Town, and the walkway or "pedestrian mall" between the Cutlass Tower Building and Vanterpool Pharmacy.

“We’re going to be getting some action very soon, and these actions or the works are going to be monitored or implemented through the RDA, and the funds are already transferred to the RDA. It’s just a matter now of getting the designs of the projects done, and those designs will be done very shortly.”

Work, she added, should begin in July or August 2025.

Hon Hodge-Smith reminded that $1.4 million of the $100 million loan facility has been allocated for these projects as part of the government’s investment in the public-private partnership.

“We are going to come forward to the private sector to see how they can get involved,” Hon Hodge-Smith stated.

Exactly !!!! Start with tidying up the parking areas of all derelict cars, busses, boats etc. Also all those junkie carwashes , food vans etc all need to be cleared out. The area by inner Harbor Marina , right outside the cruise pier is an embarrassment .

We need those Safaris buses out of the parking lot across the street from Simmonds building. they are too wide for the allocated spaces and having problem maneuvering around the tight space. having these vehicle there are contributing to the parking problem on Wickham's cay. those are tour vehicles and should not be filling up the parking lot . time will tell how serious you are about your capital.

Multiple car wash. Restaurant. Bar Beauty salon and old derelict vehicles have taken up most of the parking spaces. Then the Taxi stand take half of what is left after all this because most taxi drivers, drive their cars to the taxi stand. Park where we should be parking then tell us the other side is reserved only for their taxis. CRAZY.

NOPE, there is nothing wrong with one making an honest living. There are also guidelines and laws to follow. You can’t be setting up a business wherever you feel like

Road Town is a civil engineering nightmare. Too many people in the way now to ever make meaningful change now. You idiots started with the sewage treatment in the center of the city. Then you built a sidewalk in the middle of the road with the sewage running under it to the sea. Theres no parking for businesses and theres no sense of order or planning to anything in town. Go run talk that.

Road Town has to be the only Capital where you step out of shops and into a dirt or gravel road. It is like a scene from old Westerns showing life over 200 years ago in the Wild West of the USA.

At least they had horses. We still have a need for donkey to get around.

Town planning in the Capital of the VI has been non existent for 50 years.

All we can ever think to do is push more dirt over our precious corals.

Financial industry about to collapse and tourism industry being constantly bulldozed out of existence.

We need more of those yellow "mind the step" signs they have going on the pavement towards Nagico. It's dangerous when you are coming along and the signs are upside down. We should have 2 signs a slab to people coming in either direction are protected.

...just like the national tourism plan, the road repairs, the schools, the healthcare... it's all coming soon. After elections they'll blame it on the government that replaced them.

I wish a lot of people living and doing business would take some dam pride and clean up their dam yards and business places for a dam change. Government cannot do every dam thing that these people created. get real for a change and stop the criticizing bull nonsense.

And we seem to forget that the 4th District is also a residential district with almost 2500 people living there! How are those 3 projects helping the RESIDENTS of the district? Can we get the sewerage out of the streets? Constant supply of water? elminating the sounds man them having sounds competitions all hour of the night? Lighting up the dark areas where the bandidos hang out? Getting rid of the unsightly car washes and putting them in more appropriate areas? Fix up the Bandstand and the kids park in Long Bush? Stop Tooty from parking containers on the sidewalks? Stop people from doing business outside of their residential homes taking up all of the parking spaces and returning the two-way road back into a one-way lane thus defeating the purpose of covering the ghut. Can we clean up the Sugar works museum and girls brigade area so the kids and tourists can benefit from the area? Can we make the bandstand area feel safe to bring our Elders to once or twice a month to interact with each other. Stop heavy equipment operators from using the public roadways to park their vehicles. If you don't have land to store your trucks and equipment, then you should not have them as a business. What other plans does my dear Mrs. Hodge-Smith have besides a roundabout fix, a commercial walkway fix and sidewalk? after nearly 3 years this is all we can come up with?

Fix the water or lack of it for man residents, its a disgrace and a basic right that your tax payer dollars provide you with running water.
