PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten, DWI: It was a tough night for the highflying Tortola team on Friday, July 19, 2024 in their fourth game in the ‘Battle of the Fittest’ (BOTF) Basketball Tournament in Dutch St. Maarten.

The night before, the Tortola Team coached by Rodney Simmons aka ‘Gola’ knocked out Aruba with 80 points to their 65.

Games are being played at the LB Scott Sports Auditorium in Philipsburg, the capital city of Dutch St. Maarten.

Controversy over Skillful Ballers

However, controversy erupted when Skillful Ballers who are tied in their bracket with Aruba after both teams won 3 games out of 4, was told that they are out of the championship and they are left to play for third place against St. Maarten.

The VG team also won 3 out of 4 basketball games in their bracket, the only team to do so in their division, as they head into the championship as the underdog.

The final game in the 2024 BOTF championship game will take place on Saturday July 20, 2024 at 9:00 PM where the winner takes it all in only one game for a cash prize of $10,000 and then the curtains will come down on the Tournament.

One thing for certain, is that a Virgin Islands team has a chance to win the Championship title.  The game is expected to be live-streamed.

Skillful Ballers won the 2023 BOTF championship. VG Bayside Blazers platinum sponsor is Biras Creek Resort and the team is coached by Brian S. Brewley aka ‘Bash’ and Managed by Julian Willock.

Will we meet them once again this year? I want to watch another game of both of these teams. Awesome. Candy Clicker
  • It's a shame about the controversy with Skillful Ballers – must be frustrating to win so many games and then be told you're out of the championship. Good luck to the VG team; it's exciting to see them enter as the underdog with a shot at the title. I remember last year's BOTF championship, seems like it flew by in the blink of an eye. They're doing a great job with that LB Scott Sports Auditorium. I'm curious how they simulate the games in terms of crazy cattle 3D graphics for the live stream, to make it fun for viewers at home. I’ll definitely be tuning in to watch!
