ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Kanishque Todman’s new National Record highlighted the BVI’s performances at last Weekend’s 24th Central American and Caribbean Track and Field Championships in Morelia, Mexico.

In her first Heptathlon since 2011, Kanishque Todman improved her National Record in the seven discipline- event to place sixth overall at the Championships with 4188 points, eclipsing her 4046 effort at the 2011 NACAC U-23 Championships in Miramar, Florida.

She improved on her previous best in 5 of the 7 events, a result which surprised the athlete as she hasn’t really trained specifically for the Heptathlon.

She has now set her sights on going over 5000 points and noted that with improvements in the Javelin and 800m it is a realistic goal.

On the second day of  the Championships, Chantel Malone and Karene King finished fourth and fifth respectively in the Long Jump and 200m events.

Two fouls opened Malone’s competition but she recovered her composure to clear 6.35 and advanced to the final where she landed the same distance to be in contention for a medal. Unfortunately her leap was surpassed and after losing her footing on her final jump had to settle for 4th.

Malone, suffering with a slight injury during the CAC’s, will now focus on the August 10-18 IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia and is confident that her performance on the day there will be all that counts.

Malone had leapt over 6.5m in her last two outings and noted she has already landed at over 6.70m this year albeit as “scratches”.

King, who also qualified for the World Championships, advanced to her first CAC Championships final by running 23.64 seconds in her 200m heat. She then placed fifth in the final in 23.56.

Injury seems to be part of life for the athletes as King nearly pulled out of the race with hip and hamstring troubles.

Ashley Kelly had a non-advancing time of 24.30 seconds in her heat.

High Jumper Keron Stoute had a leap of 1.95m in his competition.
