SETTLEMENT, Anegada, VI – Three teen girls on the island of Anegada, are vying to take the crown of the Miss Anegada Ultimate Teen Queen 2021 pageant, when the competition gets going on Wednesday, December 30, 2020.

The three contestants; Angelina Evans, age 14; Gorcia Johnson, age 15; and Samantha Stewart, age 13 are all students of the Claudia Creque Educational Centre on Anegada and the winning girl will also take on the mammoth task of becoming an ambassador for the Island as the pageant enters its second year.

COVID-19 hampered reign of current queen - Pageant Organiser

Last year 2019 via a coronation, Kimberly Smith was crowned the queen, however, according to organizer Ms Heather I. Smith, while the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented Kimberly from doing all that she could during her reign, she made the best of the crown given the circumstances.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still a concern as 2020 comes to an end, pageant organizer Ms Smith anticipates great accomplishments for the new queen who will be selected on December 30, 2020.

Ms Smith said this year, the young women are required to submit video pieces doing a self-introduction and to showcase talent, along with a promotional video about Anegada.  She said the videos will be judged on courage, intelligence and display of talent ahead of the December 30, 2020, live event.

"While we will know who is the queen, they will not know [until] that night. We invite the world to join us virtually via our Facebook page, Miss Anegada Ultimate Teen Queen Pageant, at 7:00 pm when we will have the contestants do their self-introduction and talent live on stage before we announce the winner," the organizer said.

Community member to be honoured

Another main highlight of the pageant night will be the honouring of a resident of the community, having honoured Nurse Romalia Smith for her outstanding contribution to the development of youths on the island in 2019.

“This year we’ve decided to honour Keith Vanterpool for his outstanding contribution to the development of the youths and his outstanding services to the people of Anegada," Ms Smith said.

According to the organizer, the Miss Anegada Ultimate Teen Queen Pageant was designed to create a platform for young females to express themselves positively and provides an opportunity for contestants to gain essential life skills such as a growing sense of self-esteem and building confidence in front of large crowds.

It is also a platform used to raise community awareness and promote Anegada as each contestant is assigned a community project before the final staging of the event.

Last I check about 300 persons believe to be living on Anegada. (last census estimates) I sure a few will be in attendance and I know you will not be missed. All the best to the young ladies.

I am not surprised at the general sentiment about this pageant or about the young ladies who are just out to have fun in these trying times. It is obvious that if you are not from Tortola you are not "relevant". The Islands of Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada are part of the British Virgin Islands. Stop spewing your hatred and innard bias on other people that you believe are not born on Tortola. On the other hand, you are being empowered and given a voice to hate and degrade others isn't that the "in thing"?

It’s heartbreaking to read the negative comments some of our residents are putting out there. I believe that our young people are to be encouraged when they find a positive avenue for self expression and growth. The reason some of them lean towards the negative is because of the haters who have nothing within themselves and have the “crab in a barrel” mentality. Enough already.

Let’s encourage our young people to strive for excellence in all areas. Quit hating. If you have nothing positive to say, just shut the hell up.

Girls, go ahead and let your light shine. Ignore those who are busy bashing. They have empty, miserable lives and are just looking for company. They feel elevated when they pull someone down. Congratulations in advance. I’m sure that whoever is chosen will make a fine ambassador for the lovely gem: Anegada.
