EAST END, Tortola, VI - The Eighth District Representative and Opposition Member, Hon Marlon A. Penn, has stated that those seeking to remove the festivities from the East End/Long Look community are ignorant of their history.

Hon Penn gave remarks during the opening ceremony for the East End/Long Look Festival and William Penn Festiville on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

He said about two years ago, a “clarion call” was sent out to the community to revamp the festival in the community

“I have to say that Shaunice [Leonard] and her group of women and a few good men stepped forward, and they have engaged the community, and that’s evident in this whole atmosphere that they have created here tonight.”

He commended the committee for ensuring the 2025 festival celebration in East End/Long Look is a vibrant one, worthy of being celebrated

East End/Long Look people were the first free people

Hon Penn added that resilience speaks to the people of East End/Long Look.

“There has been a lot of talk that we should take away the Wednesday from East End, we should take away that from East End, but talk could only exist when persons are not knowledgeable about their history,” he said.

This year, he continued, marks the 249th anniversary of freedom in East End/Long Look.

“The East End/Long Look people are celebrating 249 years of freedom, the first free people in the Western Hemisphere. The holiday that we celebrate tomorrow is because of the resilience and hard-fought battle in the House of Assembly by…the late Leslie Malone,” Hon Penn explained.

The late Mr Malone, he said, understood what freedom and celebrating that freedom meant to the community.

“So we cannot just allow persons to make those loose comments that they’re going to take away anything from the East End/Long Look community people.”

Hon Penn, meanwhile, asked Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), who was also present at the ceremony, to ensure that the right amount is allocated to the East End/Long Look Festival in the next budget cycle.

For today’s parade, the committee received 21 entries.

How many people will stay up all night or wake up at 4am for a “Rise and Shine” tramp, but will find every excuse why getting up at 7am for a 9am or 10am church service is “too much”? It’s wild how the enemy convinces us that the church or churchgoers are the problem. yet there’s no hesitation to wake up at 4am to smoke, party, or drink.
    Something to think about.

UK did not free the Nothingham people in 1776. They were free before USA gained independence. The people took freedom and forced the Plantocracy to abandon slavery. Let them try it again, nuh?

The colonial masters don't need to "try it again" as we’ve now become the architects of our own servitude.

The people getting the most out of Festival are the ones killing the festival, they see Festival as a means of a quick and easy plenty money.."The Radio stations and DJs" I have been saying that for the past 30 yrs. Watch you will see, before festival done its Dance hall, reggae and Hip hop, local artist festival songs done with until July 15th next yr, time to look for more money,, We need them to keep the festival and local artist energy all year.. @Funny, the UK did not abolish slavery,,for compassion, well-being,,etc, of the enslaved. Slavery was abolished for it was no long profitable. Industrialism killed it.

"It's Crazy", it's easy to surmise:

Rise and Shine tramp is about having fun; its about the mingling of like- minded individuals who want to eat, drink, and jam, all the while, in a manner of dress, with a provocative touch, that's pleasing to the eye..

    On the other hand:
Going to church is about listening to a ton of old people, talking, and blabbering on foolishness, that has nothing to do, with the everyday living, of the people!

All the while, a manner of dress, dating back to the byzantine Era,; boring to look at, and causes most to fall asleep, and become disinterested!

If the church is interested in capturing the attention of the young, youthful applications of the message, in a fun and engaging manner, with a youthful form of attire, must be explored!

What happening presently isn't working, adjustments, changes need to be made to get value, fun and the history out of it..It only should be the Wednesday..Tuesday should remain a capital event, imagine, how dead Tuesday all day in the Capital was on a Tuesday...I will suggest until Horse racing return find something to have in Road town, I will also suggest an OECS Calypso night where Calypso kings / queens from the region meet here against our king and battle it out...or, Maybe East End can run with that Idea, if they want to maintain the Tuesday.. Town still need something on a Tuesday, expecially during the day, its too desd.

Who is responsible for actively keeping EE/LL rich cultural history, heritage, etc., alive and thriving? Community, community leaders….etc. How did elimination of the emancipation celebration get to such a decision /consideration? Marcus Garvey: “ A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” The Long Look community was the first in freedom ( June 30, 1776) and should be in the forefront/lead in living, celebrating emancipation and emancipation events. Everyone in the community should be well-briefed and knowledgeable about the Nottingham 25, especially the descendants of the 25. Keeping the history and heritage and culture alive requires more than the effort and energy of a dedicated few. Bravo Zulu (well done) salute to Melissa Potter, Shaunice Leonard and others for their sterling effort, leading by personal example.

It is ignorant to want to get rid of EE/LL celebrations. Revisit, Revamp and Rejuvenate starting from next month.
