This Week We Feature Young Professional Sean M. Springette
Our Young Professional for the Week is a young man who at the age of 24 years, sits in the Accounts Department of the Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) Public Works Department as an Office Generalist.
He loves the job he does as it gives him the opportunity to be versatile, gain the experience in the field of accounting as he needs it to take him closer to his ultimate career goal. The young man said he is constantly saving to finance his next move, which is to head on to university to do studies in the field of architecture.
“I like to work in any given field because I have a gift of adapting to different traits very fast.” Growing up I came from doing marine refurbishing work in Nanny Cay to air-conditioning work with Penn Brothers and now into accounting.” He also did computer studies at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
“My ultimate career goal is to become either of two professionals- a great architect or one of the best graphic designers," said our Young Professional. He said that in the next five to ten years he sees himself closer to his career goal and for his personal life, “I should by then be settled down to having my one family and being a great husband and father."
Sean M. Springette is a very soft spoken and easy going young man who hails from a very respectable family background and one that sticks closely to each other. Most of his values in life he credits to his parental guidance and the close knit of other relatives in the family circle.
“Sometimes we have our little ups and downs like any other family but the key is that we stick close as a family no matter what. We do what is necessary to solve issues that may come in the circle of life but we never let go of the importance of being a family that sticks close to each other.”
Society has also played its role in him being the gentleman he is today, including his teachers during his school years and tutors at college. He is also a part of Rotary, an organisation he says has thought him the values of community service and has also provided him the opportunity to give back in a structured way, to the VI community.
But there is a side to him that one may never say, “that’s him” if you do not visit his Facebook page or know him closely. Mr Springette is one of the most silent and skillful artists one may ever come across in the VI. His drawings tell the truth of this.
While, having seen his art work, one would definitely be led to believe that he would be making the world of money should he take on drawing as a career, Springette said, “It’s just my hobby. It’s a skill I have and I just love doing it in my quiet time. It’s what I do in my moment of meditation but yes I would one day want to see myself spring boarding into greater things with the art work I do, but it’s just a talent I have,” he said.
“I have done a lot of work just to advertise myself and I have gotten a lot of great feedback on it… so yes I would love to see my hobby turn into a big venture for me.. I have done a few pieces that I sold, some personal portraits for persons as well.”
He didn’t recognise it as a talent back in his early days when as a young boy around the age of 9 he would stay back in his classroom during break time during school he would stay back in his classroom to do sketches in the regular way of a 9 year old drawing stick man and such like.
“Over the years from doing that from primary school to high school, college and now here 2015 I am still drawing, I’ve never stopped… it’s just another thing I do on the side,” said the young man. “Drawing gives me a feeling of being someone important. It takes me to that place of knowing who I really am.”
Asked what would be his advice to youths of today, he said “I would tell them that while in your youth you tend to make mistakes try to think and plan wisely for the future. Thinking for here and now is good but sometimes it may not look good long term. So more importantly think wisely, think wisely.”
