Born in St. Thomas and raised on Tortola, Bryan A.K. Christopher has always had a passion for the water.

He attended the Ebenzer Thomas Primary School, BVI High School and eventually went on to train with the US Coast Guard, becoming a 100-ton license captain.

Christopher said he has always had a “passion for water” while speaking with Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) on December 23, 2025.

A passion that grew with time

Christopher was raised by a single father, Alford W. Christopher, following the passing of his mother when he was young.

“Because my mom passed away at an early age, I would spend my afternoons and weekends working with the late Ira Smith of Smith Ferry.”

After graduating from BVI High School in Road Town, Tortola, Christopher moved to St. John and worked with Caneel Bay Resort as a crew member, eventually working his way up to being a captain.

“After the love of operating boats for Caneel Bay and getting knowledge of how to serve and keep the guests happy, it eventually started as Escape Plus Power Boat Charters and later turned into what we've become today as Ocean Dreams in 2008.”

Continuing a family legacy from the road to the sea

Ocean Dreams was founded in about 2008. Christopher said, starting “just dealing with guests and transporting people to and from safely”.

Looking back, Christopher said his grandfather was a fisherman at some point, and so the family's love for the water may stem from there.

“My dad was a cab driver in the BVI for, I would say, 40-plus years. So you could say, watching him and seeing him self-employed, eventually, that was always the goal for myself…we decided to stay in the transportation industry, but instead of on land, we went to the sea.”

Christopher recalled purchasing their first boat in 2001.

Ocean Dreams, he explained, is run by himself and his sister, Shleby L.M. Christopher.

“We always have a close network and family. From when we lost our mom, we formed a special bond within our family, so it’s very important to operate as a family business. Everybody shares the same interests, the same common goals.”

Ocean Dreams has blossomed into a company that offers water taxi, ground transfers, day trips, island hopping, dinner trips, sunset cruises, cargo transfers, limousine and yacht tender services, haul and launch services for boats, island tours on land and vessel delivery anywhere in the world.

As for the patriarch of the family, Christopher said his father has always been supportive of not only his children but also others.

“Through the years, he has assisted in putting a number of other cab drivers on the road, helping them to get off their feet and put them on the road. He did nothing less for us.”

Their father sacrificed his life savings to purchase their first boat.

“So for him, he’s very proud of what we’ve become today.”

The Dream continues

Christopher was happy to tell us about his three children. Two of them are licensed captains, with one having their own successful cargo transportation business.

Knowing that they followed not only his shoes but those of their grandfather makes him “feel proud”.

In sharing some advice, Christopher said, “Nothing in the world that you put your mind to isn't too hard to accomplish if you put your mind and set forward towards your goals. Stay focused on that. It won’t be easy, but if you pick a passion that you love, work towards it with consistency, then you will be successful.

The Ocean Dreams team prides itself on offering exceptional service, immaculate vessels and a memorable experience for guests, always valuing themselves in safety and professionalism.
