This Week We Feature Young Professional Alexis L. Lettsome

Faced with an early challenge in her teenage years, our Young Professional for this week Alexis L. Lettsome knows something or two about overcoming difficult situations and is testimony that with determination anything is possible despite the odds.
Born in St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands to a Virgin Islander mother, our Young Professional stands poised to reach the career goals she has set for herself and at the commencement of that journey is reading for an online Associate’s Degree.
Ms Lettsome is currently employed at Shirley Trust Company Limited as an Administrative Assistant and wants to further her career in the field of accounting.
She loves accounting and her aim is to become a Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) “I am gradually working towards that. That’s my focus…that's my goal.”
“Currently I am actually pursuing my Associate’s Degree online in Accounting and General Business at Ashworth College in the United States. Once I completed, whatever is required to become a CPA, I would engage myself in it” she said.
She has been working for a little under two years at her present job and at worked at a Law Firm for 3 years previously. “It was a different field for me but accounting was part of my duties as well. I gravitate more towards the accounting industry, however, being employed at the law firm opened doors to other opportunities, where I can learn about corporate law," she said.
She tries to give advice to persons who are now finding their path in the world, as she has travelled that road before and has come out the victor.
Our Young Professional noted that she attended the then BVI High School but moved to the United States, where she lived and completed her High School Diploma.
She was an early mother, giving birth to a son at age 15. The young man, now living in the United States will be 14 in October of this year. "Being away from my son is very difficult. He was diagnosed with Autism around age 2 and it has been a fight for me getting him settled and enrolled in a proper educational system. Hence, I decided that he should migrate to the United States, where there are more institutions to assist with his condition. I miss him dearly but I want the best for him and look forward to reuniting with him soon" she said.
On another note, Alexis described her early childhood to be "fun” and had the love of her family to lean on. “I have a very large family and I'm very close to them. My family fully supports me and my decisions, along with my best friend who is always there for me." she said.
A few of her hobbies are traveling, shopping and fishing. “I like to fish…I haven’t had a chance to do it in a while but it is very calming for me." she explained.“I also love going to the beach and writing poetry. I haven’t shared any of my poetry but I take the time out, get in my zone and express how I feel on paper,” she said.
Modelling is her second profession, being exposed to it from the age of nine. “I am the current winner of the Stomp Model Madness competition, held last November. Modeling and partaking in fashion shows are also fun for me. As for now, I am currently contracted with Soirée BVI," she said.
Her advice to young people is; "Never limit your dreams and aspirations. Struggles may occur along the way but they will pass. Get back up when you fall and keep your head high going forward."
