‘They make you get so vex’ Hon. Walwyn on bloggers
During the Second Sitting of the Third Session of the Second House of Assembly on November 19, 2013 Hon. Walwyn had risen to second the motion moved by Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Mark H. Vanterpool for the appointing of Mr Ron R. Potter as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of the BVI Electricity Company.
“Sometimes some of the blogs, Madam Speaker, they make you get so vex,” he told the House and added that positions such as the one appointed to Mr Potter attracts a number of “knocks” for which bloggers were blamed.
He said because persons may think that those appointed to such positions make a lot of money unsavory comments often follow. “You know that as the chairman people might think you making a lot of money, the public hear chairman of this, chairman of that and in their mind they believe that brother Potter here may be going home with a lot of money, another one here getting her money to go home with ….” said the Education and Culture Minister.
He spoke very low of the stipend that Mr Potter will be receiving stating that he thinks that it does not reach $1000 monthly. He said in many cases stipends receive by persons who volunteer to accept such positions can barely offset their cost for fuel for their transportation.
Several persons across the territory continue to express disdain at the Minster’s inability not to attack some sections of the media whenever he rises to speak in the House of Assembly. “If he didn’t bring something about the media when he gets up to speak he didn’t name Myron Walwyn,” said one resident.
The minister was criticized by several persons for making his bias towards the media public, taking away many points from him to be categorized as a good leader.
Hon. Walwyn was not the only one who had something to say about the media. Back bencher Honourable Archibald C. Christian also took a jab when he said, “In this Honourable House Madam Speaker if you come in here and call somebody your friend, sometimes it could be misinterpreted especially when you consider the times that we are living in with the type of press reporting that we have these days.”
