ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Hon. Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), has addressed comments made by Opposition Leader Myron V. Walwyn (R6), who criticised the government’s decision to spend approximately $500,000 on the UberSoca Cruise stop in Tortola on November 18, 2025.

Hon Walwyn argued that such spending reflects misplaced priorities amid the ongoing economic challenges faced by residents of the Virgin Islands.

The premier responded during a press conference on Friday, November 21, 2025, stating, “While the Leader of the Opposition has labeled this event as just another party and accused the government of squandering resources, the UberSoca Cruise confirms that entertainment tourism is a legitimate sector of our tourism industry. It can also provide an economic boost to the retail and wholesale sectors of our economy.”

The event attracted thousands of visitors to the Virgin Islands, highlighting the territory's emerging status as a hub for entertainment-driven tourism in the Caribbean.

Hon Wheatley continued, “Many vendors were able to benefit from this event. There will always be critics; nonetheless, we should all congratulate our talented entertainers.”

Vendors earned thousands of $$ 'in just a few hours'

In his public statement, Walwyn pointed out that while many citizens are struggling with rising living costs, unreliable public services, and limited social support, the government continues to allocate large sums of public funds to high-profile entertainment events.

The premier countered, “We should congratulate our businesses and vendors, including the pubs, for seizing the opportunity presented by the arrival of thousands of enthusiastic cruise-goers.”

He added, “We had vendors who earned thousands of dollars in just a few hours. Additionally, many UberSoca cruisers supported local restaurants, participated in tours, and expressed their intention to return to the territory.”

There will always be a narcissistic clown in this Government if he doesn't turn from his wayward ways.

      From "Psychology Today" (website):

"Not only do narcissists lack the ability to give and truly mean empathy, but they consistently blame others for their own mistakes and feelings."

    PEOPLE WILL TALK PREMIER.
Some will run up their mouths and don't care what they say. Some ah talk talk talk and they mouth full ah water.
There is not a Chief Minister or Premier elected in the BVI who was not dogged out from the left or right and in-between. You will be spoken of in the present and in future also. The usual idiom when people want to talk ." Good Natalio, Bad Natalio" And the dam beat goes on. People belly full still hungry. Wip wap.

There are a lot of people smiling with him that can’t stand his guts. They tolerate him because of the seat he holds, and they just want to keep their enemy close. Only the people getting their palms greased regularly would not have a problem with how he spends money. It’s crazy!!

When it comes to art and culture in the Caribbean, valid criticism is frowned upon. You are expected to say something nice or say nothing at all.

Criticism is an essential component of the arts. In its absence, art degenerates. As a painter and sculptor, I am my own ruthless critic.

One of the region's leading playwrights once told me that to counter fawning press reviews of his work, he started submitting his own under a pseudonym. Invariably editors refused to publish for fear of insulting the playwright.

Calypso is the only Caribbean art form that. for the most part, is free from these restraints. Hence it flourishes.

So we shut down the economy for a party last week and have a holiday today on top of it. Premier we are not serious about tourism nor economics. Premier we are competing with other countries who are producing more than we are, and the best we can do is market fete to the 30 - 40 yr olds who want to fete for life. They are not coming back here they already got their fete here and are off to the next fete. We have a customer base that works for us, and they spend 500x more per individual. We need serious economic stimuli, this entertainment thing was facilitated by horse race every month. The money you've thrown away in these events would've been better served by giving the Thomas family the funds to use the track. At least we would see a tangible return that benefits the entire country, every month or so especially the 3 big racing calendar days. The overhead for these fetes, where some young ppl buy drinks and johnny cakes is just to say you're trying but not accomplishing much. Did we get head tax from the soca ship? We need serious mature people working on the economy. We need ppl who can budget and prioritize. We need ppl who arent so desperate to be liked or popular that they can say no to bad ideas confidently without insecurity. Leadership isnt for ppl pleasers it is for disciplined thoughtful individuals. We must accept what we are weak at so that we can improve in those areas. We cannot improve something that we think is perfect, and thw BVI is not perfect. Give the money to the Thomas family and get horse race going again and stop this bad event promotion incentive, you are not good at it and if it were commercially viable the ppl with experience and resources to do it, would do it on their own.

Criticizing everything your enemy does can be without credit and merit and be seen as just hate and opportunity. The Uber Soca cruise was a great event for the BVI. For me I didn't thought it would have been that good,,, Not every event success can be judge in immediate financial gains...This has long term gains for the BVI market....Would have like to see some activities on the beach..

It’s funny how we don’t have money to fix our streets, update sewerage, water and electricity plants adequately, completely furnish the hospital, make our schools adequate to house and meet the demands of our children, pay civil servants their increments fully, pay all outstanding mortgages for all our projects, finish the RT waterfront development, and so MANY other things. What vendors is this man talking about? The ones in Pier Park, and the few extras THEY invited in Pier Park for the day? What happened to the whole BVI? That ship’s arrival should have been epic. Everyone should have had a bite for the few hours they were here. Every time Natalio wants to justify spending OUR money he says he is doing it for the economy. How many of you had lunch on the ship when it docked, and hob-nobbed with higher-up folks on board? When that ship went to STT the vendors could not stop talking about its visit. They STILL talking about it. Tax is one bill we all pay on time, nobody should be OK with the way this man continues to spend our money. NOBODY! The next time water or electricity goes, just remember the money went for Ubersoca. Before that it was Vybz Kartel. Wake up people we are being lead by a man with NO damn vision.

Why do we keep getting Premiers that continue to embarrass the heck out of us? First Andrew, now this Num-skull. Why do we keep bringing and inviting people to the BVI with the place in the state it is in? We get offended when people call the BVI third world, but look at how we treat our infrastructure. The place is DIRTY. Do we have any shame? We advertise beautiful pictures in ads all over the world, meanwhile we live in sh!$ daily.

The BVI full of WEAK A$$, hot air filled people. If this was another country like Jamaica, St. Vincent, or Dominica Natalio would NOT still be in that seat making people’s life hell. He would have been voted or he would have been pressured into leaving that seat!!
