ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- While burglaries significantly dropped over the holidays, reported thefts spiked and included such items as scooters, licence stickers, dinghies, a wheel from a vehicle parked at a ferry terminal and a number of iPods, iPads, iPhones and Blackberry cell phones, a press release from the Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) stated.

The victims had discovered their electronic items missing after they were left unattended at various locations including the counter top of a busy retail store, on a bar top while dancing, under a table at a staff party and plugged in and charging at a ferry terminal.

One victim discovered money missing after leaving a bag containing $2,000 at a bar, the release further stated.

As the season’s festivities draw to a close, Police continue to remind the public to plan in advance to properly secure valuables and to take special precautions while at public places or events.

Electronic items top the list of the choices for thieves and should never be left unattended at any time while at a public venue. Handbags are also high on the list of items stolen especially from motor vehicles, tabletops and chairs, in crowded bars or on benches at sporting and entertainment facilities.

Vehicle parts such as stereos speakers and licence stickers are also becoming popular items for thieves and in recent times, entire car wheels have been removed, leaving vehicles on cement blocks especially when left for days unattended in parking lots around the airport or at the ferry docks. Persons are advised to plan ahead for securing vehicles before leaving the island.

When not in use even for short periods, Police are encouraging owners to chain lock their scooters to an object since these items also continue to be a popular choice for thieves.
