ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Deputy Speaker and Member of the Opposition Hon Stacy Mather (AL) has said it is concerning that gun violence in the Virgin Islands (VI) is not something that is shocking to some people anymore and that the territory at times appears to have become a “cowboy town”.

Hon Mather was, in particular, referring to the daring daylight armed robbery of a jewelley store in Cyril B. Romney Pier Park on July 1, 2023. The robbers were heavily armed and at least one of them fired off their weapon several times during the escape.

“I am also very troubled by the fact that I think it was two weeks ago in our country, we all were shocked to see that the Virgin Islands seems to have at times become a cowboy town, where people run through the country and using guns is not something that shocks some of us anymore,” Hon Mather stated during the debate for the second Supplementary Appropriation Provision (SAP) of 2023, at the Second Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

‘We don’t manufacture guns in the BVI’- Hon Mather

Hon Mather; however, said he was pleased to see that the Police, within the SAP, are being given almost nine hundred thousand dollars ($900,000) to “do what is necessary”.

The Deputy Speaker also said he was pleased to see that a portion of the funds for the Police will go towards security at the ports.

“Because as we all know we don’t manufacture guns in the BVI, so they must be coming in somewhere.

“And I hope with those appropriation we can reduce the number of guns that we see coming into our territory,” Hon Mather stated.

Is the UK Commissioner of Police with the Governor busy illegally in innocent people's accounts in the bamks and illegally listening to all our phone calls to try to find how to destroy anyone they can who they feel have too much wealth or who against their attempt to take plot over so they have no time with fighting the crime that exist? Every year the force getting plenty new recruits funded by the government but yet we are seeing less police presence territory wide and cannot get CGB & West End police station opened and stay opened 24hrs. The Governor and Commissioner of Police have failed the people of the BVI. They are not utilizing the resources given to them to be proactive about crime and this is by design.

It’s a DISGRACE those who are rallying for that Byron Messia fellow to come for festival including the chairperson on the Committee when his lyrics promote killing and vulgarity.

The same people want to deflect and bash the church and Christian community but ignoring their own hypocrisy.

Same people who rallying for him to come here would be saying stop the violence.

      The devil is their guide.

You cannot blame the police for crime but if the police was under a Minister then they would get full blame for not being proactive in fighting crime. This is why the Governor who is responsible for the police must be held accountable rather than daily trying to see if he can create crime and criminals to get who they hate out of their way.

Instead of echoing foolishness, the youth needs to use their brains and stop smoking that stuff. If you think that the governor and police chief who are only here for a short period of time in their jobs, while governors and police chiefs come and go, who should be more concerned about the state in the territory more? the local leaders who are elected, and the people who elected should do all they can to stop the corruption and violence, instead of blaming governor and anyone else except their own people who are chin deep in the mischief and malfeasance that is taking place.

This Governor praised the spotless record of all Governors and said they did nothing wrong. I guess he did not remember his poor stewardship over the police force of having no meaningful transparent succession plan, no increments paid to the police, failed to utilize the many resources given yearly to the police, failed to increase police presence especially knowing they received funds to get new recruits yearly, failed to get all police stations opened 24hrs a day seven days a week. The Governor needs to know that SELF PRAISE IS NO PRAISE AT ALL.

Don't take it personally., truth can be excruciating and painful when it hits a nerve.
Substanciating facts and evidence is to blame for revelation of truth.
        Deal with it.

Check the UK news daily. Then ask If the UK cannot get crime handled in the UK then why do the BVI expect them to do any better in BVI especially with this colonial mentality UK Commissioner and Governor.

Check the huge salaries of the UK Officers the Governor and UK Commissioner of Police brought in to that BVI that are in the offices and under cover. You all be shocked at the significant amount they are getting to do nothing else but try to help them advance their attempt to take over plot. It is not about the safety of the people. It is about achieving an agenda.

They police chief needs to assign those new rookies in town daily.
I don't know what is the hold up.
Also assign some of them to CGB station, as well as West End station.
Also assign two to three armed police staff at the Pier Park if the security personnel are not allowed to carry guns.
At least the robbers will think twice before they move.

Yea its a cowboy town partly because some people steadily want there to be no police representation for these "boys on the street/block/hood" and we cant seem to blame ourselves for the problems that have been artificially created with this separation & criminalization of our young men/women in addition to alienating other large sections of our community.

There is no representation. When the governor has the final say and holds up our progress then we can never truly be innovative and on the cutting edge, not while coloring within the lines of a neocolonial power.

Thanks UK for not upholding democracy. We do not want you to take over, step aside!! Stop the bias, stop the foolishness we do not produce guns, we do not produce coke. We here are rich now partly because the UK plantation owners/slave owners abandoned the lands when they left with monetary compensation for having to free their slaves! Look into those accounts. Racial profiling continues.

However when a disagreement happens everyone should feel able to call the police without being victimized as if they call the police on themselves. Legalize the flipping herb give persons more reasons to trust the police, and less reasons to feel they must resort to violence's because they cant call the police!

If a homeless man in town come slap up some people... An accidental fire starts in a house... you can bet some caribbean people, white people, indians, locals & expats of all kinds have to go stash their weed before calling the police? Thats sad.

Notice the poor management by the Governor & the Uk Commissioner of police with fighting crime and staying ahead...when a crime happens then they come out hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot after the fact with speech and doing stop and search and having heavy presence everywhere. Then when they feel it was a good enough show they drop the effort until a next serious crime occurs. They really do not care about us like they try to portray especially on their tabloid online news site that was down a few days ago.

All this criminal behaviour is predominantly and unequivocally committed by one and one demographic solely. When you take a person out of their norm practices and culture, they as a group create the same wherever they go and raise their offsprings the same. The dominant culture currently occupying these BVI are from places where the crime rate is #1 in the Northern Hemisphere and has been that way always. Nothing and no one can change that culture and practice. A purge of the puke is the only way. A hold on immigration from these places. Roundup and deporting of the illegals is a start. At least it would signal that the BVI has had it ... Anytime and everytime there's a crime ,with no reservation, it is commonly acknowledged that the offender hails from or is an offspring of one who hails from ..... Down to the deadly weapon carriers in the elementary school...Noooo but let's blame the white man...
........Kudos to Jaspert ,Rankin and the UK...they are the heros of this now God forsaken line of turd in the Caribbean island chain.

this kind of behavior should come as no surprise. Many may be familiar with the aphorism about the devil making work for idle hands. Exactly what have administrations done for the youth over the last several administrations? There is little in the way of summer camps where they could learn marketable skills. Think how far the $900k spent in the aftermath of the hold up would have gone for helping our youth. Exactly what positive examples have these same administrations provided by their behavior. What future have they created for the youth? Where are they supposed to get jobs that don’t pay $6/hour? All they see is elected politicians and their cronies getting rich through backroom deals. Meanwhile, there does not appear to be a shortage of opportunities to make fast money in nefarious activities, at some risk of course. Is there even an effort to reach out to understand our youth and their needs?
As to the claim that guns are not manufactured here, while that may be true, what evidence is there to discard the possibility that gun parts are brought in, and that guns are assembled here? This happens in the USVI.
