ROAD HARBOUR, Tortola, VI - The 2024 racing calendar kicked off on January 20, 2024, with the Latitude 18 Halyard Challenge as the windy conditions of the past week eased off for the four trimarans who took to the racecourse to battle it out for the first honors of the year.

The BVI Yacht Club said the races started in Road Harbour they raced a figure-8 leaving Dead Chest and Peter Island to Starboard before looping around Pelican and the Indians.  The long leg back up to Hog Valley Green was followed by a sprint to the finish between the Club House balcony and Lark Bank Green.

All four boats headed across to the east side of Road Harbour and tacked up the shore before heading across the channel. It was the Flying Pig that was the first to make their move but it was the largest boat in the fleet, Triple Jack who quickly stretched out ahead of the fleet.

Triple Jack was first home after 2 hours 50 minutes and 54 seconds with nothing left to do but wait and see if they were far enough ahead to take the win on corrected time.  Next up was Ting a Ling with an elapsed time of 3 hours 9 minutes and 9 seconds followed by Whoop Whoop 5 minutes and 37 seconds later.

The Corsair 27s may all be the same length, but they are not identical and are all rated accordingly.  The ‘slowest’ in the fleet is The Flying Pig but their elapsed time of 3 hours 22 minutes and 18 seconds was enough to squeak the win.

The winner of the Latitude 18 Halyard Challenge was The Flying Pig, skippered by Gilbo Simpson by just 1 minute and 20 seconds from Chris Haycraft’s Ting a Ling.

With 24 editions now completed since the very first edition in 1997 challenge, the BVIYC thanked Latitude 18, the Halyard Challenge sponsors for keeping the race going strong along with those who came out and participated and said they look forward to the 25th edition in 2025.
