The church has become too worldly- Wendell M. Gaskin
This was the opinion of Mr Wendell M. Gaskin when he recently appeared on the Relationship Rescue television programme with host Pastor Claude Skelton-Cline on CBN Channel 51 on September 4, 2013.
“I have a problem with church Claude…The church has become too worldly, their dress, their tattoos, their dancing, and their singing. Some of those music they singing in the church now is not gospel music. Don’t let anybody fool you,” Mr Gaskin said.
He mentioned the music of popular artiste Kirk Franklin as not being gospel music. “Some of those things make no sense and yes the bible says somewhere in Psalms that you praise him with the harp and those kinds of stuff but a lot of times the church will be looked for spiritual leadership but is misleading in terms of the things that you accept.”
According to Mr Gaskin, who holds the position of Deputy Financial Secretary with the Government of the Virgin Islands, the church and society have eroded because no one is speaking out against the changing trends and so everyone seems to be accepting things as they are.
“Men are not supposed to be going to church with their hair braided up and two earrings in their ear and that kind of stuff. We have lost a lot of our things in our society. We accept too much of foolishness and so therefore our whole society is breaking down. It is collapsing and eroding and after a while it will just fold up and fold in.”
Mr Gaskin blamed the lack of strong leadership in the churches for the break down in morals and reverence. “The churches like long ago where you get leadership from you are no longer getting them because the preachers are afraid to preach on the topic.”
Asked by pastor Skelton-Cline what pastors could do to attract more men to the church, Mr Gaskin said they needed to tell the truth and speak according to what the bible instructs.
Man of the cloth not immune to sin!
Noting that all have sinned and come short of the glory, Mr Gaskin said sometimes pastors are held too high on the pedestal and thought of as being immune to sin.
He explained that someone had told him that you don’t judge people until you have walked in their shoes because everyone has an “Achilles tendon” or a weak spot. “But I must say that I am looking for that spiritual leadership, especially for men. And when you go to church you find all the women them in the church and the men somewhere else.”
Women has responsibility to get men into the churches
“The women them are also responsible for bringing the men to church,” was the opinion of Mr Gaskin.
He reasoned that one partner cannot be in the church and the other at a bar. “You going to church, the wife, and your husband and children in the club. Tell me what kind of society we building? We seriously building a society where everything out of control. We make laws on the books and we don’t enforce them. We do all manner of things.”
Mr Gaskin also chided parents for having their children at the festival celebrations at late hours and claimed that some children were even purchasing and consuming alcohol.
“I remember when I was a child, I couldn’t be in the village two and three 'o’clock in the night. I was in the village the Friday night and I see little children buying alcohol. That is another thing that we need to enforce in this country. Teenaged and underage drinking creating serious problems in this community,” Mr Gaskin stated.

There is a steady and relentless degradation of our values. I am convinced that the leadership in government and the local congregations are oblivious to the dark forces- "We wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers of the air". Society does not know this and the church leadership is not sounding the trumpet.
Today, most local congregations oppose the singing of Hymns for a more syncopate/rhythmic sound called "Praise and Worship". This movement also encourages "non adherence to rules and restrictions" - since we are saved by grace, and the Grace of God covers a multitude of our sins, there is no need to rules. Rules are viewed as being legalistic. Hence there is a proliferation of Tattoos, piercings and other demonic activities.
The church's role is to shed light into the dark places of the world but the the people who were called to shed that light are adopting the darkness of the world they were sent to illuminate.
May God help us.
