ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Recently the churches in the Virgin Islands came in for criticism for being too passive in the face against pressing issues in the territory. Another criticism since leveled against it is that it has become too worldly.

This was the opinion of Mr Wendell M. Gaskin when he recently appeared on the Relationship Rescue television programme with host Pastor Claude Skelton-Cline on CBN Channel 51 on September 4, 2013.

“I have a problem with church Claude…The church has become too worldly, their dress, their tattoos, their dancing, and their singing. Some of those music they singing in the church now is not gospel music. Don’t let anybody fool you,” Mr Gaskin said.

He mentioned the music of popular artiste Kirk Franklin as not being gospel music. “Some of those things make no sense and yes the bible says somewhere in Psalms that you praise him with the harp and those kinds of stuff but a lot of times the church will be looked for spiritual leadership but is misleading in terms of the things that you accept.”

According to Mr Gaskin, who holds the position of Deputy Financial Secretary with the Government of the Virgin Islands, the church and society have eroded because no one is speaking out against the changing trends and so everyone seems to be accepting things as they are.

“Men are not supposed to be going to church with their hair braided up and two earrings in their ear and that kind of stuff. We have lost a lot of our things in our society. We accept too much of foolishness and so therefore our whole society is breaking down. It is collapsing and eroding and after a while it will just fold up and fold in.”

Mr Gaskin blamed the lack of strong leadership in the churches for the break down in morals and reverence. “The churches like long ago where you get leadership from you are no longer getting them because the preachers are afraid to preach on the topic.”

Asked by pastor Skelton-Cline what pastors could do to attract more men to the church, Mr Gaskin said they needed to tell the truth and speak according to what the bible instructs.

Man of the cloth not immune to sin!

Noting that all have sinned and come short of the glory, Mr Gaskin said sometimes pastors are held too high on the pedestal and thought of as being immune to sin.

He explained that someone had told him that you don’t judge people until you have walked in their shoes because everyone has an “Achilles tendon” or a weak spot. “But I must say that I am looking for that spiritual leadership, especially for men. And when you go to church you find all the women them in the church and the men somewhere else.”

Women has responsibility to get men into the churches

“The women them are also responsible for bringing the men to church,” was the opinion of Mr Gaskin.

He reasoned that one partner cannot be in the church and the other at a bar. “You going to church, the wife, and your husband and children in the club. Tell me what kind of society we building? We seriously building a society where everything out of control. We make laws on the books and we don’t enforce them. We do all manner of things.”

Mr Gaskin also chided parents for having their children at the festival celebrations at late hours and claimed that some children were even purchasing and consuming alcohol.

“I remember when I was a child, I couldn’t be in the village two and three 'o’clock in the night. I was in the village the Friday night and I see little children buying alcohol. That is another thing that we need to enforce in this country. Teenaged and underage drinking creating serious problems in this community,” Mr Gaskin stated.

The one topic that he & his sidekick forget to have the churches tackle is corruption in high public senior offices. Then the gang in question sins will be covered in the discussions.

Who made Wendell Gaskin an authority on the church? It's always the ppl that don't lay a foot in the church or make any contribution to it, that have the most disdainful things to say. Have a seat Mr. Gaskin. Have several of them.

I would like to congratulate Mr.Gaskin, for his discussion on this matter, which allows persons to give their views [blog] on this democratic news site,in the free and democratic territory of Her Majesty's b.v.i. The church, like schools, colleges etc, should be seen as a religious institution where persons learn about god,and learn to do good things in society and to keep away from bad things..It doesn't matter who is the messanger, but let us all look at the message from Mr.Gaskin. Mr.Gaskin is an honorable citizen of Her Majesty,a belonger of the BVI,who like all of us is a sinner,to be saved by the grace of god and to be protected by the holy spirit.Like most of us,he is a religious man,and I welcome such topics in our society. It's good for young people. We should not turn all discussion into politics;because in this article by Mr. Gaskin,I don't see where he said to vote for NDP or VIP.He made a constructive criticism of how our churches operate outside of religion and how they by-pass certain social issues. In my view, these statements are good for public debate,so I am pleased to read your many blogs and to sense that you are enjoying freedom in the bvi.
May the good lord-god continue to bless and protect Mr.Gaskin and the citizens andother residents of the beautiful B.V.I...

Part of his statment is true a man or a woman of God have to be distinguish as a child of must high God now dont make no fuss there is God's Creation and there is God's children " to them that believe and receive Him has given them power to become sons of God" there is no issue with music is the lirics, sent to my church all the young people with braided hair we will gladly receive them, after they know the true is a diffent story. everyone is accepted in my local church. I think the desire of every woman of God is to have her family save and attending to church so such alegations of that is in the woman charge to bring her husband I dont buy it. I did not wachted the program , dont know in what capacity this gentleman was there. but his points of view are his point of view, I dont neccessarily have to know about fruits but I like mango and dislike guavaberry.

Mr. Gaskin is correct. Today, many people call evil good and good evil. Additionally, men are objurgating their responsibilities. God continues to call men but women are responding to the call. I agree the church leadership is to blame for not speaking the Truth in an forceful manner. Consequently, judgment will begin in the house of God.

There is a steady and relentless degradation of our values. I am convinced that the leadership in government and the local congregations are oblivious to the dark forces- "We wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers of the air". Society does not know this and the church leadership is not sounding the trumpet.

Today, most local congregations oppose the singing of Hymns for a more syncopate/rhythmic sound called "Praise and Worship". This movement also encourages "non adherence to rules and restrictions" - since we are saved by grace, and the Grace of God covers a multitude of our sins, there is no need to rules. Rules are viewed as being legalistic. Hence there is a proliferation of Tattoos, piercings and other demonic activities.

The church's role is to shed light into the dark places of the world but the the people who were called to shed that light are adopting the darkness of the world they were sent to illuminate.
    May God help us.

what are we talking about. Even the pastors are living in sin. They marry divorce people who they know cheat on their former spouses and they themselves marry after cheating on their spouses. God will call us all into judgement if we dont repent.
