ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- As health officials in the Virgin Islands seek to land a ‘coup de grace’ on COVID-19, testing for the virus will be increased significantly, according to Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Carvin Malone (AL).

Speaking during a live COVID-19 update this evening, April 29, 2020, Hon Malone said the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) is expected to receive additional supplies during the course of the week that will enable the Territory to “ramp up testing significantly.”

The Minister; however, did not state the quantity of supplies and where they were sourced.

“It is through extensive testing that we will be able to detect and contain any remaining cases of COVID-19, thereby minimising the risk of transmission in the Territory,” Hon Malone said.

The Virgin Islands has had 6 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 3 full recoveries and 1 death.

120 persons in total have been tested.

Latest samples return negative

Meanwhile, Hon Malone announced that all tests returned from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in Trinidad and Tobago this week were negative.

“Tonight I am pleased to say that over the course of this week, 27 samples were tested by CARPHA and all results were negative for the virus that causes COVID-19.”

Hon Malone said 9 additional samples are “pending” at the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) and will be sent to CARPHA shortly.

I totally with you if government is yo role out s stimulus package for people affect and let's assume government decided to give 80 % of what you were earning basic on your contribution to social security if this is the source person that have only been employed in the territory for two years and less basic on their income might not be able to qualify for the package. Reason being some have not made any way near the contribution making government at great lost by giving someone stimulus payment that have just been here for a short period.

We have been inside for 28 days. Twice the incubation period. If you had it then its gone. With no one new coming in to the country this is the only logical conclusion to this situation.

Pure irrational fear and propaganda at this stage.

More testing is great news. The asymptomatics are the super spreaders. Ideal would be testing the whole population but not yet, increase testing is a big leap.

Prior to the 1st lockdown 146 person were quarantined at the time only 75 tests were done total we got news of recovery and then of 5 ppl only quarantined.
We have as of last night been told 199 in quarantine but to this date after almost 345 persons in total have been quarantined how is it that only 120 tests have been done.

No wonder the disease keep spreading out of the 345 200 could be Asymtomatic not show signs and go back out there and spread the disease.

Test everyone who is quarantined plain and simple what’s the point of only restricting movement and not knowing the persons status. Why do we only test persons who are showing signs let’s wake up people come on ramp up the tests.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again have the lady been tested when she came in the end result may have been different.
Are we limiting tests just so that we can keep our numbers low???

Good morning VINO! I enjoyed following your news site but lately, things have been getting quite disgusting. It is obvious that persons are using your site to push their hatred of other people based on their nationality or geographical location. I wonder at times if these people are being wilful or uneducated. Most of the time, their comments have nothing to do with the subject at hand. One should as though, is this a calculated and sinister agenda by certain agents in our midst to create unrest within the territory as a way to distract or derail the Government in their successful management of the territory in these trying times? I wish as the Government opens its door in an effort to return the Territory to some sort of normalcy that all pay close attention to the guidelines outlined to protect themselves, coworkers and loved ones from COVID 19.

Well if you are paying attention you would notice that by the Government passing this discriminatory 7% tax during these most critical times that has brought out the ugly in persons. The divisions were already there but this tax only compounded the problem. The tax was ill-timed and really unnecessary as there were other means to that end.

Government IMHO have not been good at updating us with information in regards to the Corona virus positive cases. No medical personnel on their panels. They have refused to do any Press conferences so information like the connections between case 4, 5 , and 6 will never come out. Something as simple as saying how many test kits have been ordered with the people money: Nada. They have flip- flopped on many things whether it be Hairdressers, then it was getting rid of Phase 1 and right into Phase 2. Very reactionary with their approach.

I supported this Government but I am not one for blind support. I call it as I see it.

Great leadership. Thanks so much Premier Fahie and team. I'm certainly in no rush to get back to St. Thomas and it's 27 current cases. Relax, follow the rules, and be nice. We are Blessed here in Tortola.

More testing! Everyone in quarantine should have been tested. Dominica has tested three times what we have.
