Importers and shipping agents face higher operational costs starting next week as the British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) prepares to end its temporary fee relief on Monday, August 31st, 2026, according to a Facebook post by BVIPA. Photo: Facebook

Beginning September 1, 2026, standard port rates will be reinstated across all territorial ports of entry.

The temporary concessions, which were first introduced as part of government cost-of-living relief measures to cushion local businesses and consumers against global inflation and supply chain pressures, offer reduced operational tariffs on key shipping costs, including wharfage rates and container handling fees.

Adjustment to Standard Tariff Structure

With the conclusion of the temporary concession period, standard BVIPA tariffs will resume, wharfage charges will be reinstated from the discounted 1% back to the standard 2% rate on incoming cargo, and Container Handling Fees will return from the temporary $150 rate back to $300 per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit).

BVIPA management is urging all commercial entities, customs brokers, and cargo consignees to take note of the upcoming expiration and adjust their logistics and billing processes accordingly.

The Authority noted that making timely preparations ahead of the August 31 deadline will help ensure smooth cargo clearance, prevent processing delays, and allow businesses to align their operational budgets with standard fee schedules.
