ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Among the group of adults to speak at TEDx Road Town, is twelve-year-old Farrari Khan, an emerging scientist resident in the Virgin Islands (VI) who among several other things, have started a ‘roots and shoots’ programme which he is expected to speak about.

Khan will speak at the TEDx RoadTown forum—in its third year in the VI—happening this coming Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the Arbitration Centre conference room.

Ideas Worth Spreading

It is a conference affiliated with/licensed by the TED organization and operates in accordance with their motto “Ideas Worth Spreading”. Under this year’s theme, “The T.I.M.E. Is Now” those ideas range from AgroEcology to the transforming power of Education, from Moral Profit in business to the future of Blockchain, from Survival to how to help our Ecosystems and Urban Spaces thrive.

The 11-year-old Cedar School student loves science and his passion for natural science became even more profound after he was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 11 years when he fell ill with pains to his knees. “Within a week, I was diagnosed with stage 4 Burkett’s leukaemia. Secluded in a hospital room and receiving intense treatment, I often dreamt of the outdoors,” he said in his TEDx Road Town profile.

He also said, “Now I’ll use all my effort to spread awareness of the disease and give back to the world after being given a second chance in life.” Since his drive of giving back, the young man has raised funds that were donated to the Humane Society, BVI Cancer Society for childhood cancers, environmental concerns and children’s home.

Community Work

Just last December, Khan presented Ms Gloria A. Fahie, President of the Virgin Islands Cancer Society with a check for $800 following his most recent fundraising initiative for a cause that is close to his heart.

The money was raised in collaboration with Cedar International School, Century House Montessori and the supportive staff of Eureka Medical Clinic who all took part in wearing the solidarity colours for childhood cancer.

Farrari's said despite his hobby of listening to Ted Talks, he never guessed he would get an opportunity at being a speaker at a TEDx session.
