Team Tortola blow out St Croix team 81-44 in Mamba Mentality 3 on STT

CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI- After narrowly losing to Young Legacy of St Croix on Friday, March 29, 2024, Team Tortola aka ‘Hustlers Never Fold’ (HNF) rebounded to crush Roogoodoo of St Croix, 81-44, on Saturday, March 30 in the Mamba Mentality 3 basketball tournament being played at Ivanna Eudora Kean Gymnasium on St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (USVI).

Team Tortola, which is using the tournament as a warm up for the King of the Courts Caribbean Championships, which starts on April 4, 2024, at Multi-Purpose Sports Complex on Tortola, fell 73-75 to Young Legacy in their opening game on Friday.

Vs Young Legacy

Douran R. Phillips top-scored for Team Tortola with 19 points, while Ray D. Victor and Franklyn E. Penn Jr had 15 points each. Norville S. Carey chipped in with 10 points.

Team Tortola trailed 14-24 at the end of the first quarter and 37-45 at the half.

“We crawled back to take the lead in the 8th minute of the 4th quarter and we went up as much as 4 points but couldn’t hold on in the last two minutes of the game,” Manager of Team Tortola Joash Victor told our News Centre.

Victor noted that key players such as Carey and Phillips were also fouled out.

Vs Roogoodoo

It was somewhat of a redemption on Saturday; however, as Roogoodoo of St Croix were crushed 81-44 by Team Tortola.

Douron Phillips top scored again with 19 points, the consistent Victor netted 16, Daven D. Ottley 15 and Carey 6 points and 10 rebounds.

Joash S. Victor said the team started out strong, boosted by the presence of guard Romain D. Minott who flew in from the UK to join the team in the USVI.

“The lead at one point in the first quarter was 25-9,” Victor said, adding that Daven Ottley came out firing with about 12 consecutive points in the first quarter. Victor said this time the VI was able to take a commanding lead early and build on it.

He said Roogoodoo; however, managed to reduce the lead to about 6 points before the second half but Team Tortola was able to find more gears in the second half.

VI play defending champs Team Thrill Figga today

Team Tortola are in action at around 5:30 PM against defending champions Team Thrill Figga of St Thomas. Team Thrill Figga are seeking a 3-peat.

Should the VI win, they may end up playing for the championship later tonight.
