CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI- A teacher at the Ivan Dawson Primary School in Cane Garden Bay has allegedly been suspended after it was brought to light some two weeks after that she gave a student a cleaning agent to gargle.

According to reports reaching Virgin Islands News Online, the cleaning agent was identified as Pine Sol.

Reports are that some teachers and an official attached to the school were aware of the incident but failed to report it to the Principal or Ministry officials.

The shocking allegations; however, were related at a Parent Teachers Association (PTA) meeting this week.

The teacher has since been “suspended”, according to reports reaching our newsroom.

When contacted, the school’s principal Ms Tonya M. Bertie-Phillip declined to comment.

Education Ministry taking matter 'very seriously'

Meanwhile, Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has been made aware of the incident.

“I will be issuing a statement on it shortly,” Hon Wheatley said.

The Ministry of Education and Culture has since said "it is aware of the allegation concerning a teacher, which is currently being circulated via social media and that this matter is being taken very seriously.

"The health and safety of our teachers and students remain a top priority and therefore all necessary measures are being adopted to investigate this matter promptly."

Pine Sol has always been considered to be low in toxicity but recent studies have found it may contain chemicals that are known to cause hormone disruption, pregnancy complications, birth defects, and cancer, and can aggravate allergies.

If this is proven true, that teacher that did the act and those that knew and covered it up should all be fired.. and legal charges should be brought against “all” parties involved for possibly endangering this student.. of so what if by chance him or her accidentally swallowed some of that pinesol.. I know if that was my child somebody would be paying the piper..

What a hateful, sick, low down person who did this to the child. They could have burned their mouth, got poisoned, did internal damage if swallowed. What in the hell were they thinking? You gargle with water or mouth wash, "NOT POISON" you clean your floors with. DUMB IDIOT!!!!!! Throw the book at them and the parents should NOT let this rest until justice is served. We send our children to school to learn, not to be poisoned by the ones in charge of their care. This teacher needs to be reeducated in common sense and humanity.

What kind of person would do this to a child? No matter what words came out of the child’s mouth, NOTHING makes such an action okay. It is child abuse, plain and simple. At the very least, the teacher should be suspended and disciplined and educated in acceptable ways to redirect and discipline students.

Not saying this wasnt bad, but their are Always two sides to a story. The reasons may have been a sore throat or punishment for bad language. In either case it might have been well diluted and be no worse than Listerine. I well remember kids being made to wash their mouth out with soap for swearing.

How can an educator do something as foolish as giving a child pine sol. Suppose the child had a allergic reaction or drop dead. If the child was not feeling well, it was the school responsibility to contact the child parent/s not take it upon themselves to administer anything to the child without consenting the child parent/s. You people here do all kind of stupid S**t and get away with it. As a parent, I strongly urge the child parent/s not let this go under the rug. If proven to be true, the teacher and whoever had knowledge needs to be TERMINATED on the spot. I guess if the child had died because of the stupidity, they would have cover it up and said the child found the pine sol and took a swig. Everyone involved need to arrested and terminated. There is no excuse for this.

I sat here and read all of your comments and saw everyone bashing the teacher. As wrong as she was, I have not read one comment advising our children to refrain from using curse words, whether at school, at church, at play or anywhere else, because we the adults use them as if we are drinking a glass of water, with not a care in the world. Our children are the resemblance of who we are. They learn what they live, people! Maybe some of us adults need to wash our mouths with the pine sol and not our children because we are teaching them daily by the life we live around them! Now you may blast me, if you are without sin, cast the stone!
    • GG (30/01/2020, 13:10) Like (16) Dislike (1) Reply
To Native Lady, let me ask you 2 questions. Do you think the commenters on this article would be this harsh on the teacher if she had use Listerine or water? If you are a parent, would you want anyone to abuse your child jn that manners and on top of that instill fear and said dont tell your parents. I am sure your answers will be NO!

There are less serious measures this teacher could have used to discipline but she diluted pine sol as a gargle. The mere fact she diluted this agent in her mind it could cause harm to that child. Pre-meditated!

Look, as a parent I felt this and luckily for this teacher it was not my child. Now please go consider the foolishness you wrote trying to attack the child's parent. Yes children learn things at home from friends, tvs etc. Teachers cursed words infront of students too and say all manner of evil to them so just hush for goodness sake.

Absolutely not acceptable if what is being said is truth.
A glimpse of the future. A big cultural divide has taken place and continues unabated with the granting of status Willy nilly and not addressing this elephant in the room. Honestly speaking we are different in culture and behaviour character and core values as evidenced by crime statistics i" updeislun" and the BVI. School children with the updeislunan home training are a challenge and it takes a mighty strong willed or don't give a crap teacher to cope I will rather spend a fortune to have my children taught in a private exclusive setting than be exposed to the behaviour in the regular schools. BVIslanders are losing their country, their good name and as evidenced by this teacher their mind. She should plead temporary insanity because school children of a certain demographic are demonic.

It was not too long ago, a toddler was physically and brutally assaulted in a daycare establishment,by a teacher.
The daycare establishment was never publicly identified nor was the teacher nor was the owner of the daycare . It is rumored that the teacher,an expat continued her tenure uninterrupted. Unsuspecting parents enrolled their toddlers and life goes on. So why now all the brouhaha
Seens to me that this casual and non attention would give license to other teachers as in this case. Why the double standard.
.The lack of consistent enforcement of rules ,laws and regulations in the BVI creates these kinds of unfortunate results .
