‘Taxi Commission needs to go home!’ – Lorrie A. Rhymer

“We have a taxi commission that does absolutely nothing, they need to go home, the need to resign and to go home, pack up their stuff and go home!” Mr Lorrie A. Rhymer said on the Speak Out BVI radio show aired on April 22, 2014. Photo: VINO/File
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Public Relations Officer of the People’s Empowerment Party, Mr Lorrie A. Rhymer has called for the disbandment of the Taxi and Livery Commission, accusing the group of not doing its job of informing Taxi operators in the Territory.

“We have a taxi commission that does absolutely nothing, they need to go home, the need to resign and to go home, pack up their stuff and go home!” he said on the Speak Out BVI radio show aired on April 22, 2014.

According to Rhymer, the Commission is supposed to be informing taxi drivers of impending danger and it was not doing so.

Rhymer, who said he was speaking on his own behalf, contended that agreements signed between the BVI Ports Authority and two other entities, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line, were ‘not in the best interest of the Virgin Islands’.

He expressed that the agreements required taxi drivers to purchase at least $2M of insurance coverage and this would mean that most taxi drivers would have to drop out since they cannot afford the cost.

He offered that this would give cruise companies the opportunity they wanted which was to bring their own vehicles and transport their own people. “I think that this is a disaster it is an impending doom for the taxi drivers in this country,” Rhymer stated.

In the last election the taxi drivers rally behind the NDP. Now here in the position they have been placed in. How many of you can buy a $2mill insurance coverage? The Cruz lines sure can. So here is the predicament. You either stay outside the gate a get the leftovers or you park your taxi and work for the Cruz line who will be bringing their own buses to do your job. The fine print wins again.

Buying a $2m liability insurance does NOT cost $2m! Surely taxi men must already have something similar in their vehicle insurance. Most car owners have about $500k included. It is a misunderstanding to say that the cruise lines will bring in their own taxis and drivers. It's already been said that the cruise lines through their agents have arrangements with selected drivers/taxis, so why is this being aired again?

What Rymer here is saying is correct. I cannot tell you how true it is being on a cruise that stopped in Jamaica and I saw this appalling set up where the nationals were shut out. I stepped outside the gates and the poverty and desperation outside the gates made me afraid- there were so many nationals around heckling the tourists, so I turned back. To get back inside I joined a long queue and regretted venturing outside the gates. Up ahead I noticed a couple go to another gate, flashed their cruise card and were let it. I then realized that I was in the wrong line and went to the other gate and got back in quickly. The long queue that I was in initially was nationals who had to have special requirements to enter.
I am telling anyone who now enjoy the use of Wickhams Cay for recreation, and for the lunch time beauty & scenery get as much of it now, because that land that Decastro, Lloyd and all those who fought for it, the NDP has given it to Norwegian and Disney, selling their birthright for a morsel of meal.
When you see the carnage that NDP is leaving in their path, I ask myself, did you all not learn from the last time? Did you all not remember? How could you make that dreadful mistake and put them in again? Is fancy suits you all had wanted to see so? You could have gone to any one of those stores, Royal Shop, they would have given you a discount even and you could have dressed yourself up if pretty suit is what you wanted to see.

well mr rhymer the government was responsible for have the Taxi Livery commission up and functioning according to the constitution.the whole destruction of the taxi livery commission started with Mrs Ferdinand and Julian Frazer, they have done more damage to the taxi and livery commission.I personally think that there were only to be the Taxi,Limo, and Bus plates. Now the minister for communication have this Spanish and Filipino guy here going to the mooring sun-sail and footloose picking up the guest that the taxi should be doing.several complaints were made to the Director of the Livery board but so far nothing being done.

You have done more damage to your country by not understanding the changes needed for progress, and not having the intelligence to READ and UNDERSTAND the laws governing such changes. Proper implementation is the key.
