Talent galore at Ivan Dawson Christmas concert! [Photoslide Included]
Families, friends, residents, and government officials gathered at the New Life Baptiste Church in Cane Garden Bay for the school’s annual Christmas Concert held last evening December 6, 2011 where there was literally not a dull moment.
From the masterful coordination of the chairperson who opened the concert, Peggy Clyne, to the final Medley by the school, everyone could have attest to a great evening of performances, talent showcases and harmonious singing but most of all, the feeling of the Christmas spirit.
Destiny and Ajani welcomed the audience to the concert with a recitation which made way for several sparkling performance after performance in the form of songs, recitation, skit and even a puppet show.
Among the great performances of which all can be deemed, was a song by the Ivan Dawson Primary School Choir titled, “Facts not Fairytales” as they sang about the true meaning of Christmas.
Even though Kimeko, a young student, broke down in tears during her recitation of “The Happiness Way” she was able to pull herself together with the help of her teacher and complete her piece with the message about Christmas being a time of sharing and giving and not about getting - clearly sent.
Led by veteran music teacher Verna Perkins, the IDPS Bell Ringers did an award winning rendition of “We Three Kings”.
The most hilarious performance of the evening came from a play by the students titled, “A Mix Up Christmas Story” which was so mixed up that the narrator, among her many “mix ups” said Joseph was told by the Angel that Mary was bad.
The narrator was quickly corrected throughout the presentation by two other performers that helped to bring her back on stream with the correct Christmas Story, though at times the narrator would still question that real Christmas Story to the amusement of the audience, many of whom were rolling with laughter. The narrator, though corrected that Mary and Joseph did not go into the Plaza Hotel to get Baby Jesus but rather in a manger and not even a motel as she insisted, said a manger is where animals lived and questioned whether the baby would not have contracted mad cow’s disease.
The play was so mixed up that even the Shepperds that brought Jesus gifts were mixed up for elves in a field. The play was even more hilarious since as the narrator said the incorrect story, performers were playing the incorrect part, and when she was corrected, they were ushered off the stage for the real story performers. She even ended the mix up story by wishing everyone a Happy Easter then quickly corrected to Happy Christmas.
When everyone thought the hilarious part of the concert was over, they were in for another surprise, a puppet show that sent loud uproars.
Led by Joan, the puppet Amy enjoyed her attention as she told the story of Christmas in her own way and sang for the students, she even asked them to applaud her and questioned why she was not given back up music when she began to sing and could never hold her high notes.
It was the surprise act by a group called the Debonaires, comprising of 10 boys from the school that rocked the audience with their original piece “Christmas Again” and which earned them encore.
The concert was considered to be fun and a huge success with the audience leaving with cheerful smiles on their faces – a simple but early start of the Christmas spirit spreading its joy.
