SVG men accused of obstructing police from capturing fugitive Nyron Erickson

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Two Vincentian men, Deverson Williams and St Elmore Garraway, were criminally charged after they allegedly played a role in preventing police from apprehending longtime fugitive Nyron Erickson last Sunday, July 12, 2020.

Williams, 37, a resident of Belle Vue, was charged with ‘Obstructing a police officer’. He pleaded not guilty.

Garraway, 42, a resident of Georges North Side, was charged with ‘Perverting the course of justice,’ and was not required to plead when the charge was put to him during their arraignment hearing on Wednesday July 15, 2020 at the Magistrate’s Court.

This is because the matter is heading to the High Court.

Allegations

Court reports of the incident, according to Prosecutor with the Director of Public Prosecution’s Office Kael London, indicates that last Sunday, July 12, 2020, police officers visited Garraway’s residence in Georges North Side to execute a search warrant.

While making their way to the residence, they noticed Williams having a telephone conversation on his cellular phone outside of the building.

The officers immediately shouted ‘Armed, Police! Don’t move!’; however, Williams ran indoors and locked the door behind him.

The officers then proceeded to the house, and overheard someone shouting ‘Police! Police!’ and they observed persons in the house scampering, including fugitive Nyron Erickson.

Erickson made good his escape by running to the back porch and disappearing, along with others unknown, into the nearby bushes in the area.

In the meantime, police officers had to force their way into the house and during their search, found the duo, as well as Trevon Cumberbatch, who was charged with illegal entry, hiding about the house and premises.

Police also found surveillance footage of the property depicting Erickson and others arriving at the property at about 4:00 pm that day.

'I thought it was somebody coming to rob me' - Williams

Prosecutor London said, according to the police reports, Williams said he ran and locked the door behind him because: “I did not know who you were. I thought it was somebody coming to rob me, so I closed the door and went inside.”

Meanwhile, his co-accused Garraway denied knowing Erickson.

He said he was having a party for his construction workers.

Bail

Prosecutor London informed the court that he was objecting to bail for the men; however, attorney for the men, Stephen R. Daniels made a successful application to the court on behalf of his clients.

Magistrate Christilyn Benjamin then admitted that the offences were bailable and offered the men bail.

Williams was granted signed bail in the amount of $20,000 with one surety, while Garraway was granted $60,000 with one surety.

Among their bail conditions, the men have been forbidden to have direct or indirect contact with Erickson, report to the Road Town Police Station between 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, on Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Friday for Williams, and for Garraway, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

The matter was then adjourned to September 30, 2020.

If you were born in the US whether Mainland, USVI, or PR and grew up there whether or not your heritage is from there, you would be considered a local resident. Even if you were not born in the US and had a Green Card.

It have some BVI people and I am a BVIslander calling you all out, quick to want to deliver your child in the US to get status and want status yourselves but ready to say who can and can't be local or have status in the BVI.

Besides what people are saying on the street about this young man. Does anybody really know what he is “wanted” for? And I mean real factual information, not just hearsay. I don’t recall reading why in any of the police statements. If he committed a crime in the BVI then the public needs to know! I would certainly like to know. I remember a few months back the police issued a warrant for his arrest then it seems like the warrant disappeared or the case got cleared because since then I have seen the young man in severals shops going about his business unbothered. I thought he turned himself into the police and they let him go!?? Now the police “re-issued” a warrant for his arrest??? This must be a joke.

It is a valid question tho. A lot of ppl want to kno wa he wanted for. If what people are saying about him is true, then why the police ain’t say wa crime he wanted for or in connection with? We live in the BVI long enough to kno that ain’t every story passing long the road you must take and run with.

@FEO Gomez ...so you mean to tell me that for all the crimes some ppl claiming this dude commit right here in our BVI, our police looking for him to ship him out? What happen to JUSTICE for the ppl of the BVI? If he committed a crime in the US then the US should have grabbed him up themselves! Why are we doing their dirty work and not cleaning our own BVI backyard? We need to stop bending down backwards behind AmeriKKKa. Look at the mass incarceration rates of black ppl in that country. Whether they’re guilty or not - some black ppl are dying at the hands of cops before they even get a fair trial. You think the US would send any of their own to the BVI when he need to answer questions for alleged crimes in the US? Nonsense!
