According to that country's news entity, news784.com on January 18, 2018, the package included guava, breadfruit, mango and soursop to a variety of plum and sugar apple plants.
On September 6, 2017, a category 5 hurricane, Irma, made a direct hit on the Virgin Islands, flattening most of the plant life across the islands. The storm bashed the territory’s infrastructure, leaving millions in damages and claimed four lives. Some communities are still today waiting to have electricity supply restored, as the recovery process continues.
On September 13, 2017, a Vincentian Government Delegation comprising Agriculture Minister Honourable Saboto Caesar and then Minister of Economic Planning, Honourable Camilo M. Gonsalves, along with three (3) technicians, made a post-Hurricane Irma visit to the VI.
Agriculture Minister Hon Caesar said a commitment was made during that September 2017 visit to provide the VI with planting material to assist the territory with its fruit tree re-planting programme.
An official handover of the relief supplies took place on January 18, 2018, at the Cabinet Room in Kingstown. The event hosted by Prime Minister Dr Ralph E. Gonsalves and Hon Caesar, was attended by technicians visiting SVG as part of a project to address the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with several community-based organisations.
