ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The motoring public, particularly taxi drivers, is being encouraged to take advantage of a free tint testing exercise at the Road Town Police Station from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Friday, March 15, 2024.

The maximum penalty for illegal tints is $750 per glass.

A special message for taxi operators!

Taxi drivers and tour operators are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the absence of cruise ships in port and get their tints tested to avoid potential stops while transporting tourists.

“What we are trying to avoid is the taxi drivers saying they have tourists onboard when they get stopped to test for tints. However, the law applies whether they have tourists or not.

“But using our discretion we would prefer you come in and get your tint tested” so they wouldn’t have to peel their tints off when tourists onboard,” Sergeant Glenn Callwood aka ‘Supa Cop’ stated in a social media post.

Mr Callwood continued: “I don’t want when you get stopped on the road you use the excuse that we trying to embarrass you in front of tourists and all of that.”

What’s the point of heavy tint on taxis? Sgt Callwood asks

The well-known traffic cop said police have been noticing a number of taxi buses with heavy tints on them, “you can’t even see the driver.”

He said, “Outside of the law, I am wondering what you have to hide in a taxi vehicle that is transporting tourists on tours, and to the beaches and can’t see out clearly, to see where they are going and to see the beautiful island of the British Virgin Islands.”

Mr Callwood urged all motorists, including taxi operators, to take advantage of the free tint testing exercise, because “after Friday, don’t say give me an opportunity I going to take them off. That wouldn’t be valid at that point.”

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) confirmed the free tint testing event will take place on Friday and added in a press release today, March 11, 2024, that, “it's important to note that adding extra tints, even if within the permissible percentage, to any vehicle that already has factory tinting may be deemed illegal and would have to be removed.”

They need to move to the rentals next. These rentals are heavily tinted you cannot see who the drivers or occupants are.

Umm it is appreciated, however he cannot go about executing his duties the way he does. It’s close to abuse and being a bully.

I think the initiative is good, but it is already biased by the comments from Mr. Callwood. Asking "what the taxi drivers/ owners have to hide. That the tourists vision may be impeeded by the dark windows and not seeing the beautiful country" paraphrased. As the provide poster homes to customer service and anger management, I totally agree. Sgt. Callwood needs to be professional in the execution of his job. Stop belly vindictive, spiteful, and malicious... His supervisor also should take note of the many complaints against him. Yes sometimes it's good to put the pressure on, but also remember it's the same public the police calls upon to help solve crime. And once a police twice a civilian. From a former police officer.

So true but you know what’s funny just how he spoke about what the taxi drivers have to hide?? But we as a ppl need rise up it’s about time the tint requirement change we live in the tropic where we have blazing sun ppl use tints to protect their self from The sun…. Some ppl has skin condition where they can’t take to much sun light especially some of those tourists.. it has ppl with eye condition that they have to use tinted glasses n has tints on their vehicles to protect from the sun….. now back to what we got to hide??? What does the same POLICE “arm unit” why are those pick up and jeeps are so heavily tinted???? What are they hiding it done has officers who got in problems for illegal activities we want see who the dirty cops are too and be able to know it’s actually police and not someone else….. what ABOUT THE POLITICIAN THEM who in these BLACK VEHICLES with 5% round n round what are they hiding? They claim Andrew was running drugs in our country what are they hiding in these dark jeeps ? It’s funny when the D7 rep pass in his jeep you can actually see him trying to be not vigilant and notice my boy no one is studying you….

I am always wondering why Isn't super Cop an Inspector, I can't understand why, because he is the street standard, hated, respected, no nonsense, do it by the Law..I am thinking is it because he is hated internally and getting a fight because he does his work well.? .Is it because he is not a yes man cop to top brass in the Force..Is it because he didn't do the exam or did the exam and failed then again a good cop is more than exams.? ..He can't be that illiterate..Why Isn't Duper Cop not an Insp.?. Well, my one fault I find with him, he needs to take explanations and reasons into consideration and imply good discretion and gave written warning which is in his discretionary authority...Still I think he will make a good Insp.

I am in support of Callwood doing his job however this heavy hand approach is not helpful. What i know he ain't doing is stopping no taxis with tourist onboard to have them peel off their tints. I do hope his supervisors and Tourist Board are taking notes and take responsibility when this happens. My thing is he knows who they are so deal with them where they live.

Does removing tint off windows make society better ...does it stop crime? There's a ton of busy work going on for police that needs to be re-evaulated. What purpose is it really solving?

That's not all she love overstating and working illegal is part of it too. She worked the same place i worked once , and i promise to call immigration on her. The police force is so slack they dont do background checks on these people. This is why there are so many bad apples in there. Police officers now have tattoos , long facial hair and dreadlocks , so you cant tell the diffrence them and us.
