Sunsail sacks many of its employees

- Some 14 workers, including 5 managers, laid off
Sunsail BVI, located at Wickham's Cay II next to The Moorings, is one of the major employers in the sailing industry. It is also one of the major employers in the Territory to make major cuts to its workforce. Photo: VINO/File
Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Natural Resources and Labour, Mr Ronald F. Smith-Berkeley told Virgin Islands News Online when contacted that based on the information reaching him, a number of persons from Sunsail BVI had indeed been terminated. He said that while he was still gathering the facts, he has confirmed with the commissioner of Labour Ms Janice Rhymer that some of the workers did take the issue to the Labour Department, which now has the matter in hand to ensure the workers are not disenfranchised. WICKHAM’S CAY II, Tortola, VI - Some of the major employers in the Territory are continuing to cut their workforce, even as the National Democratic Party (NDP) government holds fast to its claim that the economy is robust.

Virgin Islands News Online was able to confirm that Sunsil BVI recently terminated the services of close to 20 workers, five of which were managers and a number of security staff members.

This news site was approached by some of the dismissed managers who, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged they were let go even after they were told in a meeting days prior that they would not be sent packing.

One of the managers also claimed there were plans afoot to let go of a further large number of workers. We were unable to confirm this information, however, as calls to Sunsail's Operations Manager Clarence Malone and Human Resources Manager Nadine Maduro were not returned.

Further, one of the workers alleged that they even approached Labour Department who they alleged was aware of the layoffs beforehand as Sunsail had informed them and had even produced the cheques and all documents of payments intended for the affected workers.

“The Tuesday at a meeting, Mr Malone told us that no one was going to lose their jobs and then the Friday in the same week around 4:30 P.M. we get a call to come and pick up our letters,” one of the dismissed managers told this news site. He also said he was disappointed that the persons allegedly being laid off were VIslanders and belongers rather than those on work permits.

Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Natural Resources and Labour, Mr Ronald F. Smith-Berkeley told Virgin Islands News Online when contacted that based on the information reaching him, a number of persons from Sunsail BVI had indeed been terminated. He said that while he was still gathering the facts, he has confirmed with the Ag. Commissioner of Labour Ms Janice I. F. Rhymer that some of the workers did take the issue to the Labour Department, which now has the matter in hand to ensure the workers are not disenfranchised.

He said he could not say how many of the affected workers visited Labour Department or the exact number of workers dismissed by Sunsail but that it is estimated it to be approximately 14 workers.

This is about the third major company in the Virgin Islands that has significantly cut its workforce within a two-month period. Yet the Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith has not apologised to the residents of the Territory for his statement that the economy is robust or publicly sought to give a proper explanation for his statement.

Many, concerned citizens, business entrepreneurs, and members of the House of Assembly have denounced the statement by the Premier and some have called for an explanation from the Premier but to no avail.

What the Premier has since sought to do is to call for the support of members of both sides of the House of Assembly to defend Financial Services, which is currently under severe criticism and pressure on the international scene.

Acting Premier Dr the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering has been calling for the Territory to pray for the Premier as the country is facing “trying times”.

@Really, I think you hit the nail on its head. IT DOES NOt matter which party , this island financial section about to go down big time, the government need to let the people know; so that they can know what to do about spending. Those expat are going home, leaving us to deal with this financial situation, they need to invest some money in BVI.

It is abvious that you cannot see what is going on, the goverment does not need to tell you what do about spending. The writing is on the wall. I think that the expats has done enough, they pay their fair share of taxes, they shop in the supermarkets, they rent your houses and i can give you more how the expats has helped the econonmy.

And on that basis, this government should be dissolved and elections called immediately. They have failed their mandate to grow and protect the economy and protect the interests of those who elected them - BVIslanders.

Wow seems to me that was the situation even before the last elections which took place in 2011, when it was vigorously proposed that BVI was experiencing financial difficulties which were not taking place elsewhere in the world. What goes around comes around.

Belongers let go and those on work permits retained? This is in keeping with the stated 'globalisation' agenda. Globalisation only benefits business at the expense of citizens and works to enrich businesses by lowering the standard of living. I hope you all are beginning to understand how that works.

People need to understand that those who has high paying jobs are being laid off from their jobs. Can't you all see what is happening in this place. The CEO/ owners of these companies find a way to keep the same figures in their bank account so you who are getting lots of money per month look out $monster is coming .
The small man who getting low pay don't have to worry especially those who on work permits they are doing 6 man jobs for 1$ you understand what I am saying so people again look out the $monster is coming your way

While I am sorry for many losing their jobs, I'm very happy to see that chickens are coming home to roost here in the BVI. Everybody is against development and putting things in place to bring more jobs and money. Everybody became comfortable and played politics with every issue because they felt 'safe' in their little jobs. Now we are facing reality. Let me see if people will continue to play bullshit politics with the future of this country going forward now that we see what's happening. This has nothing to do with NDP saying the economy is robust. The economy is good and has great potential but how can that happen when BVI people saying NO NO NO to every single thing? We have potential to create jobs and ownership opportunity for every BVIslander but we continue to be backwards and fight eachother over petty politics. When will we learn??? I'm glad it's finally happening!! VIP's solution is to spend more Government money. Mind you, every time people are laid off it means less money collected by Government. NDP solution is private enterprise and investment.

Biggs I see what you are saying but you must admit that our labor force is busting at the seams. High school graduates, college graduates and some returning home cannot find jobs but yet the employers are putting in work permits and labor department is continuously approving them. This system cannot be sustained anymore. Furthermore, the amount of people on work permit exemptions now instead of working one job are working 2 and sometimes 3 jobs.

Boss, development built the BVI. This place has been stagnated since HL Stoutt passed. He was pro-development as long as it meant betterment of the BVI, jobs and prosperity. I will say it again. Until people stop the bull$@#%^ and pettiness it will only get worst. Development in Tourism and Financial Services got us here. Sitting back and just asking Government to spend spend spend more without doing anything else will not take us forward. How can employment be addressed if we are not allowing investment into the Territory? You are basically telling private companies they can't invest, they can't do this, they can't do what they want to earn more money but you want them hire more people to spend more money? That's not how business works. There are many places actively marketing and seeking our market share in many industries and they're making headway. Let us continue the bull#@#$$%t and see what happen. This has nothing to do with permits. IT has to do with a people who don't understand how an economy works. People continue to think via emotion rather than common sense and reality. The fact is without expats the Government couldn't employ over 3,000 people while paying another 3,000 pensions and private sector wouldn't have so many locals with good paying jobs. Wake up and smell the roses. Potential investors monitor the blogs in all these countries do you think they will spend their hard earned money here after reading all the ignorance? All the locals who milk government for ages, what have they invested in the BVI? Not a @#$%^ thing but yet expats are to be blamed? Ya'll set of @$$ho@#$! You think it bad now just wait! All we need now is to elect VIP to finish kill it and I hope you all wicked ungrateful people do just that and feel the wrath!!! From 2007 elections people were told this would happen and now it happening it's NDP or expats fault.

These days business is all about survival and businesses all around the world are having to cut back just to keep the doors open. It has nothing to do with VIP\NDP or belongers/ non-belongers or black/ white. For those who have not heard....the world is in a recession. Either companies trim the fat or close the doors and everybody goes.....SIMPLE !!!

I hope you all realize that a company letting go staff, in these times ia all about the bottom line. We here in the Territory have been doing well compared to other places in the region. I think that we have taken a lot for granted, because many of us have become too laid back. We have developed a sense of entitlement, which has nothing to do with the quality of our contributions. Many of us are not contributing, but want to collect and expet that companies are in a position to keep paying out. Its all about the bottom line. If we know that collectively, we are doing all that we can to ensure a productive work environment, then a real case can be made. However, if the numbers show that it is no longer sustainable to keep people on, then the first to go, are usually those least productive. My grandfather use to have to cut the roads here, by machete and hand in the BVI, back in the day. No choice, everyone had to work hard in those days, once you left school, otherwise, you wouldl have to pay a road tax. Our forefathers have worked very hard, and we stand on thier shoulders, however, we don't work nearly as hard. Our system of gov't encourages complacency and a lack of accountability. In the states, they call that "welfare". I think that we are better than this. However, if our people are not ready to create an investor friendly environment, one that encourages businesses to come here, or even to develop here, then there are those who are more hungry and will work harder to compete for the same investments, in other places. Instead, our own government puts restrctions in place for companies, which the government itself is not required to adhere to, because it can't afford to. Companies here pay a very heavy toll to conduct business. There is a double standard, which makes for a very unfriendly, unsustainable business environment. I pray that we can all get our heads right and even in these difficult times, put our best foot forward.

IT MAKES ME SICK THAT PEOPLE STILL BELIEVE THAT 1 MAN OR A GROUP OF MEN CAN MAKE THE CHANGE THAT REQUIRES AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY TO TAKE PART IN. EVERYBODY WANT TO LOOK AT THE ISSUES AND SAY WELL "DA AIN MY PROBLEM, DA GOVERNMENT GA DEAL WID DA" BUT WHAT THE HELL IS THE COMMUNITY DOING ABOUT IT? THE GOVERNMENT PARTIES HAVE NO POWER BUT THE POWER WE THE PEOPLE GIVE THEM, THEY ARE SOLELY THERE TO REPRESENT US, BUT IF WE DONT STAND UP AND MAKE IT CLEAR WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN, THEY WILL DO WHAT THEY FEEL IS BEST. PEOPLE SPEAK UP!
