ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Last week, Wednesday, the Sugar Mill Hotel of Tortola won the prestigious International Hotel Award (IHA) for best Small Hotel in the Caribbean.

According to a press release from the Island Sun, the award was presented at the annual IHA gala at the Savoy Hotel in London.

Developed to identify, highlight and reward excellence throughout the global hospitality industry, the International Hotel Awards in association with Bloomberg Television seek the finest operations throughout a wide range of areas. Sugar Mill Hotel is not new to international awards. In 2006, Condé Nast Traveler’s Reader’s Choice Poll placed Sugar Mill as One of the five Best Hotels in the Caribbean. Additionally the Sugar Mill Restaurant was named by a second reader's poll as one of the best restaurants in the Caribbean, the press release further stated.

The Sugar Mill restaurant was also honored as one of the three best restaurants in the Caribbean and Mexico on Celebrated Living’s Platinum List. Celebrated Living is the magazine for American Airline’s first and business class passengers. Conde Nast Traveler named the Sugar Mill as one of the ten best hotels in the Caribbean in both 2010 and 2011. In addition, Conde Nast Traveler’s Concierge listed the Sugar Mill restaurant as one of the 12 most romantic in the world. And more recently the hotel was named in Travel and Leisure magazines 16th annual World’s Best Awards readers’ survey as one of the 500 best hotels in the world.

I have spent several vacations at The Sugar Mill and there are few places in the world where you can truly say you found a place to relax. Of course the food is fantastic and the atmosphere is just what the doctor ordered (no, I don't have a girfriend who is an MD). My wife and I especially like the variety of rooms and I would suggest the twin suites with an adjoining veranda. And thank God this is not a big ritzy hotel with all the trappings. This is like home in paradise. Did I forget, yes I did...they have their own beach right across the little road with a burger bar and great pelicans parked in the trees. I have got to get back there...dm
