ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Five unanswered second half goals set off wild “gangnam” style celebrations as the Sugar Boys walloped Islanders to lift the Wendol Williams Cup on Sunday October 14, 2012.

Not even heavy rains sweeping the A.O. Shirley ground could dampen the jubilation and celebration of the Sugar Boys as when the final whistle blew they knew that a major BVI Football Association Trophy would be heading back to Virgin Gorda for the first time.

They played with a passion, commitment and skill that more than matched the perennial pre-tournament favourite, Islanders. The defeated Islanders again found their passing game and tactics severely tested.

The Sugar Boys almost went behind early in the second half though as a Nano Ottley header was disallowed for a previous infringement on ‘keeper’, Stephen Dandrade.

A free kick some 24 yards out swerved and dipped on Dandrade who could only parry the ball upwards. As he recovered Andy Davis was adjudged, somewhat harshly, to have impeded the keeper as he challenged for the ball. The ball was then headed clear by Maxford Pjpe, but straight onto the head of Ottley who nodded it into the back of the net.

Ottley had also bought out the best from Dandrade who saved the strikers first time shot following a pin point cross from Davis.

In fact, Dandrade had made two or three first half saves to keep the score deadlocked, including one seemingly goal bound header from Rohan Lennon. The first 45 minutes had seen the Islanders control the opening minutes and also the final few with the Sugar Boys looking their most dangerous through half chances from Jario Morris and Derrol Redhead.

The disallowed second half goal should have inspired the Islanders to pile on the pressure, but as it turned out it ignited the Boys to unleash a 5 goal onslaught, the like of which has rarely been seen on the A.O. Shirley Ground and even more rarely seen against the Islanders.

They were quite literally torn apart

First, Terry Nanton scorched a header past the helpless Shane Henry and then just moments later doubled the lead as he finished a move right out of the English Premiership.

Not happy with that, Derrol Redhead then converted a penalty after Henry tripped Wallace and then the same player fired home an unstoppable half volley into the top right corner, again leaving Henry no chance

As the rains came down even harder it looked Michael Castillo rounded out the scoring for the Sugar Boys when he slotted home the 5th, but such was the incredible scenes of victory it was hard to tell, for one thing Coach Jeffrey Demming has instilled in the team is a sense of togetherness as borne out by the way his players responded to his commands and acknowledged his importance as part of the goal scoring celebration.

Demming is a man who goes about his business quietly and efficiently and was quick to praise his players for their efforts and success. “At half time I just told them to take it to them, I knew we had them and had it under control “he said “this has been a long time coming and it’s a sweet victory for us.”

Two-goal scorer Redhead agreed, “We regrouped at the break, started to move the ball around faster in the second and it paid off.”
