ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI -This week, the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports is spotlighting the importance of inclusion in the educational system by celebrating the achievements of special needs students and the dedicated educators who support them.

From December 1-5, 2025, the ministry has designated this week as Special Education Week, embracing the theme: “I Lead, I Learn, I’m Different, and That’s My Superpower.” This theme aims to inspire and empower students, emphasising that diversity in learning abilities is not just acknowledged but celebrated as a valuable asset.

Committed to inclusion

As part of its ongoing commitment to inclusivity, the Ministry of Education has made significant strides, including the recent establishment of the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre in October. This facility is designed to provide specialised resources and support to students with special needs, ensuring they receive the attention and education tailored to their unique abilities.

Students & educators will be honoured 

Throughout Special Education Week, the ministry will honour the remarkable students and educators within the community by sharing their inspiring stories and accomplishments via daily posts on Facebook. These highlights will showcase the strength and determination of these individuals, illustrating how their differences contribute to their unique perspectives and talents.

The initiative underscores the ministry's dedication to creating an educational environment where all children can thrive together, fostering a culture of understanding, acceptance, and collaboration among peers, educators, and families.

The Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports, Honourable Sharie B. de Castro (AL), was contacted for a comment, but has not responded.
