STT Carnival Village named in honour of Cleve ‘Grapo’ Turnbull
‘Grapo’ Turnbull, who was an artist by profession, was the brother in law of Virgin Islands Party Chairman Honourable Julian Fraser RA (R3). Turnbull’s sister is Kharid Fraser, wife of Honourable Fraser.
Speaking to this news site, Mrs Fraser explained that her brother and his work would always feature as part of the Carnival celebrations hence the decision to pay tribute to him by naming the village in his honour.
“Over the years at the Carnival he was the artist that did the backdrop for the queen shows and the other shows at the Lionel Roberts Stadium, he did banners for a lot of the troupes and the booths,” she said.
Mrs Fraser noted that usually for the Lionel Roberts Stadium backdrops, the Carnival Committee would give him the theme for Carnival for that year and he would create the backdrops accordingly. She said he would also do the artwork for a number of the booths.
“Besides that he was an artist in his own right. He had a lot of paintings. He never liked vinyl…he would paint on wood or use canvas.”
She said that some of his work could be seen at Crafts Alive and in the Social Security Board office.
Mrs Fraser said there was a little ceremony on Friday evening thanking the family for allowing 'Grapo' to make his contribution over the years.
