ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Virgin Islander Keron Stoute and the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats made programme history on the final day of competition at the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon May 3, 2014 at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track, as the men’s programme earned the first MEAC Championship.

Stoute led the MEAC Championships Decathlon (10 events) after Day I with 3,834 points and was on target to not only break the MEAC Record, but also the VI National Record of 6609 points.

However, needing 645 points to break the Territory’s previous best in the last event, the 1500m, Stoute seemed hampered by injury and finished well down the field to claim just 167 points and ended up second overall with a total of 6,318 points.

Starting competition with the 100m Stoute ran 10.90 to garner 883 points. He then had a 6.78m Long Jump effort for another 762 points and scored 700 in the Shot Put with a 13.53m toss.

Having finished first in the Shot Put Stoute then made it a double with top spot in the High Jump, adding 813 points with his 2.01m effort. In the 400m he scored 476 points running a time of 53.14 and then another 722 points with a time of 16.10 in the 110m Hurdles.

Achieving 34.10m in the Discuss was good enough for 546 points and a 3.75m Pole Vault was worth an additional 549. His Javelin distance of 44.01 brought 500 points, but then came the disappointment of not breaking the record in the 1,500m. He was 2nd last year with 6,108 points.

B-CU Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Donald Cooper was selected the MEAC Men’s Track and Field Outstanding Coach for the first time.

“It was a hard fought battle and a lot of great competition from all teams,” Cooper said. “This has been one of the best MEAC (Championships) that I have been at, and our team persevered.”

Opening the final day with a 25-point advantage on the men’s side, the Wildcats kept the momentum rolling in a complete team outing on Saturday May 3, 2014, wrapping up the competition with 132 points and a 31-point victory over second place, North Carolina A&T.
