SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our news centre is that sometime between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM today, Sunday, April 21, 2024, there was a small fire reported close to the quarantine stables at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay.

A small room was destroyed; however, no injuries were reported.

The origin of the fire is not known.

Chief Fire Officer Mr Zebalon A. McLean confirmed to our news centre that Fire and Rescue Services Department was called about the fire.

Mr McLean said fire officers responded and successfully extinguished the blaze.

Races for August Tuesday?

As of today, the state of negotiations with the Thomas family to have races for August Tuesday 2024 remains uncertain.

Ellis Thomas Downs is the only horse racing facility in the Virgin Islands (Tortola) and most of the land is leased to the government by three family owners.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has said the land issue will be fixed; however, he has not indicated if there will be August Tuesday races for the 70th anniversary of the Virgin Islands' Emancipation celebrations this year.
