‘Stop importing hazardous foods!’ says Edmund G. Maduro

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Talk show host Edmund G. Maduro believes the Territory is importing too much chicken, beef and pork tainted with chemicals passed on from the feeds these animals get so that they grow quickly and does not think it will do good for the health of Virgin Islanders.

He was speaking on his EGM Radio Show aired on Thursday evening June 5, 2014 on ZROD 107.3 FM.

“Much of the food we import is unfit for human consumption,” said Maduro. “The chemicals are retained in the tissues of the animals. The food we eat is hazardous,” said Maduro, noting that in many cases the foods are not even permitted to be sold in the countries of origin.

“We do not need to import these unhealthy foods. We can produce our own foods,” he said.

He said that despite there being a number of greenhouses in the Territory, “we have not produced one tomato or eggplant.”

Maduro is of the view that the Territory has the potential to produce enough food both for local consumption and for export.

“We are more interested in sports fishing than we are in agriculture. Is the Government of the day paying attention to the development of its people?” asked Maduro.

he is right. we have the climate and resources to produce our own food. But Government hasn't considered working with the farmers willing to put in the time. the money used for the green houses could have gone into irrigation equipment. valuable flat land was taken up by the empty green houses, and hill farmers in Carrot Bay and around have not had any support. Agriculture could be the third pillar and all those villas on VG would be happy to pay for local organic foods.

It is a myth to think that Subway is healthy! All their meats are processed products full of salt and additives.

glad you said that. I agree. I was thinking why get a subway franchise in here when someone can make better sandwiches right here. The meats are full of nitrates and preservatives as you say.
