ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – STO Enterprise Ltd. is sponsoring the race car that the Althea Scatliffe Primary School is entering into the soap box derby which takes place at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College on Sunday October 19, 2014.

As the school’s team makes the final preparation for their car to be in the race, this news site caught up with some of them today October 16, 2014 at the school.

One of the Assistant Principals of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Ronda D. Smith said that she is expecting the school to win in every category that it enters.

One the day of the race the school will enter the various categories. “Of course Mr Stoutt was instrumental in getting the car for us and donating…we were having a bit of difficulties and he got to it and we got it in good time to get it ready for this week,” she said.

Speaking to this news site, Dion A. Stoutt, Managing Director of STO Enterprises said, “We got a call asking us about sponsorship for this event and then Caribbean Insurers Limited also got involved. The insurance company picked the school and we just went along with that,” he said.

“We were able to donate and in good time…Miss Smith contacted me, we had dialogue for a couple of weeks and we went ahead and got the car. The car should be getting painted and it will be the fastest car on the track,” said Stoutt.

He said that his company contacted a soap box derby website and made the purchase of the car, which needed some level of assembly before it could work. He said that the car is now being professionally painted so that it represents the school in terms of the paint job.

Speaking on behalf of Caribbean Insurers Limited, Director Simone T. Monsanto said that when she called on STO Enterprise to be a sponsor for this event, they said yes.

“[This sponsorship] is going to make so many little hearts happy on that day and it will save the parents the financial burden along with the teachers and the school to build that soap box car,” she said.

Other sponsors of soap box cars taking part in the derby are Hon Myron V. Walwyn, Minister for Education and Culture; CCT; EMCS Caribbean (Nervin Wheatley); Ricky’s Trucking (Ricky Connor); Avengers Basketball Club (Rajah A. Smith) and Benn’s Welding (Lorenzo Benn).

Well I might be wrong but I thought that one of the points of this tournament was to showcase the ability of the kids, teachers, parents and other assistants to come up with a design that was attractive, fast and interesting. I did not realize that it was about ordering a kit and painting it. I understand wanting to help the school with an opportunity to participate but other schools and participants worked hard to build their entries. I just find it unfair. Anyway, CIL seems to have endorsed it. What do I know, anyway.
