ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The BVI Christian Council (BVICC) has called on those contesting the 2023 elections in the Virgin Islands (VI), to focus on the issues rather than on other individuals contesting the elections.

In a statement released today, April 13, 2023, the BVICC also reminded individuals and party members seeking office, to ‘resist and desist’ from using derogatory remarks and engaging in defamation of character on the campaign trail.

“It’s important that persons understand the far-reaching and adverse impact that such scandalous and negative rhetoric and behavior can have on the territory’s youth and its future,” the Council said in the statement.

“Our Heavenly Father is watching; our children are watching. The people you seek to represent are watching, our elders are watching. The whole world is watching and listening,” the Christian body added.

People can agree to disagree - Apostle Geroge

The Council reminded that BVICC President, Apostle George Rodney said people in the VI can agree to disagree while adding that Candidates must stick with the issues, make their points clear and allow the voting public to decide without the need to tear each other down.

“That is not who we are and that is not the democracy that the ancestors of these Virgin Islands fought so hard for. The Council understands that this is no ordinary election cycle. However, it is not an excuse to engage in defamatory campaigning,” the statement added in relation to defamation and derogatory remarks.

The Council further said those who seek political office must demonstrate discipline and decorum as they present and debate the issues of the day, given the local electorate deserves and demands better.

Where there is no vision the people perish. All candidates need to seek God for direction, if not they repeat the same behavior over and over intended to get better result. The churches need to hold specific services for the candidates to pray with them, to give counsel and encouragement. There is work for the church to do and not sit back and make statements of what the candidates should do. It is clear they are all clueless of the next step.

I agree this is no ordinary election for in all my life I have never seen anything like it. Visionless leaders, they only power is use to tear each other down. I pray God will take those who are teachable and guide them to lead this Virgin Islands. To fix unemployment, agriculture, banking, Labour, immigration, their relationships with foreigner, and expat workforce, and more.

the church in our land have gone dead for whatever reason:

some could recall the church kept this country in peace and harmony when we were growing up: but now most folks are now caught up in the system

Money have made the change: we don’t want to speak out because speaking out we will not get the grant and speaking against social bad behaviour we might offend some persons

It is shameful; those who looking to lead our country are simply full of hate for each other and very negative yet asking you & i to have them lead us………no wonder the United Kingdom is knocking at our door…….poor political leadership have disrupted the growth for our people

Church is now a Sunday/Saturday Morning Gathering
