Stephens sets Territory’s 3rd fastest century of all time
With the majority of the Territory’s top young athletes foregoing competition and the hoped for matchup between Mark Kendall, Jamal Alexander and Stephens in the 100 failing to materialize, it was left to Stephens to highlight the short programme of Field Events and Track Sprints.
Stephens, competing against the U20 and U18 boys, ran 10.54 seconds with a +1.0 breeze. His time eclipsed Alexander’s 10.56 from 2012 as the best by a home trained athlete and put him at #3 on the Territory’s All Time list. Stephens improved his mark from 10.67 last year.
Ebenezer Joseph ran 11.36 in second in the U20 Boys division as Stephens’ closest pursuer. Joseph ran 22.67 behind Stephens’ 21.93, to start the meet.
Akeem Bradshaw also put in a stellar performance as he soared to the best series of Triple Jumps ever for a VI athlete behind National Record holder Keita Cline, leaping over 14.00m three times and settling for a career best of 14.29m. His series also included jumps of 14.28m and 14.15m in the U18 Boys division.
Although he did not have the minimum number of competitors in the field, his mark would have moved him from #11 on the All Time List to #2 with his 14.29m effort displacing Leon Wheatley’s 14.08m from 1997. Guy “Toby” Hill is the fourth VI athlete to have jumped 14m or better with his 14.00m effort from 1983. Cline’s mark is 16.16m.
Bradshaw then went on to produce his fastest time of 2 minutes 05.41 seconds over 800m.
Fast Lane Track Club’s Kryon McMaster ran a legal 22.19 seconds in the 200m for his best mark ever, and then followed up with a jog of 51.62 in the 400m. He ran 48.77 during the Scarlet and White Indoor Invitational in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, last weekend.
U18 Girl Kala Penn reached 11.64m in the Open Triple Jump then ran 25.98 in the 200m, representing Top Notch.
Kadeon Potter, 5th in last year’s Carifta Games U17 Boys Shot Put, threw over 14m in for the first time in his career, with a personal best heave of 14.13m sporting the Fast Lane blue and grey.
Raw Skillz’s Shaniyah Caul had the day’s notable performance. Caul, who will not be 15 until December, ran her first 400m in 2 years, recording a personal best of 1 minute, 00.91 seconds. She also recorded a personal best of 26.66 in the 200m.
With the LIME National Jr. Championships on the horizon on March 21-22, the 10th Development Series meet is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1.
