ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) is urgently in need of staff to fill critical positions in various areas in order to effectively achieve its mandate. This is according to CEO Mrs Darlene Carty-Baptiste.

Commenting on the most critical areas that she has seen as being in need of improvement within the BVIHSA, the CEO said, “I think it’s just vast, we need to look at our workforce and start developing a strategy for staffing.”

“No, we’re not adequately staffed, I could tell you that right now,” she said while pointing out that areas such as emergency medicine and nursing were of much concern. The CEO further felt that the shortage of nurses in particular, was a worldwide phenomenon.

“Some of our support services,” she continued, “we need to do better as far as recruiting technicians, nurses, medical assistants and filling those gaps.” In addition to these, specialty areas such as cardiology, neurology and nephrology were in urgent need of being boosted.

Mrs Carty-Baptiste further spoke of aggressively looking at risk analysis, gap analysis and an audit for A&E. An assessment for the training and nursing being done at the hospital is also expected to be done.

Speaking on the issue of leadership, she noted that persons needed to be in place with a mindset to plan as if “we fail to plan then we plan to fail.”

Mrs Carty-Baptiste expressed the need to integrate the hospital with the community. She felt that it was necessary to look at evidence-based programmes to this effect and also to build collaboration with key stakeholders and also to create new partnerships with persons who had not previously been involved with the organisation.

The CEO further related the importance of Public-Private Partnerships, both within the region and by extension the entire Caribbean, and also the need to look at educational opportunities for persons as a transition was being made to the new hospital.

She added that it was also necessary to build up the leadership staff, “I really believe we have a very strong group of leaders at the helm, we just need to make sure that everyone has the ability to effectuate the change and drive the accountability throughout the organisation.”

I am a BVI lander and I did pass my boards with no complaints. Its easy for everyone to chase the jam down and the africans but none off u who do the complaining are actually living or working in the situation. A lot of the issues or new ceo touched on are very true with the exception of management. Now this next statement does not reflect on all management only some. We have very weak management within the authority. Staffing is the least of our problems. We have locals in position that make it their pleasure to be very rude to staff members, and constantly aggrevate locals who return home and realize health service authority not ready to graduate from their petty power grabbing ways and realize health care is not about which position they hold but about the clients we serve.

your entire management team is weak from CMO right down to HRM. I do not agree with more staff at the moment. It is easier to fix a smaller mess than a bigger one. I agree with voter that the two jokers will bring down the pack, especially, the ghetto diva.

In particular the CoMS and DHS are the weakest links in an already rusty chain. Hmmm, one of the CoMS's star recruits is his last place of work:

This is bad, he had this in his background and they hired him? I am now beginning to understand and realize that we are guinea pigs for people to practice on. We need better health care with competent and caring physicians and nurses.
Do these folks do background checks or do they swallow all the garbage these folks dish out? All that glitters is not gold is a truse statement and if someone's CV looks too good then I question it. Because then where they are would be moving heaven and earth to keep them. Only in the BVI, how sad.
People in the BVI it's time to let BVIHSA know that we need better members fo staff and better quality care after all it's out tax dollars paying all those heafty salaries and then some of us have to go home and eat bread while some making 12, 000.00 per month eating steak. It's our money we deserve value for money, is that not NDP mission statement?

nurses are treated with too much disrespect, and i agree that the management is very weak, and they manage on gossip and rumors not evidence.
