St Lucia backs OECS in condemning attempts of UK Direct Rule in VI

- Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre said direct rule represents a retrograde step in evolution of democratic process

CASTRIES, St Lucia – Prime Minister of St Lucia Philip J. Pierre says his country is backing the stance of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to condemn any possible attempt of the United Kingdom (UK) to impose direct rule on the [British] Virgin Islands.

PM Pierre made the statement during the United Nations Pacific Regional Seminar on Decolonisation held in Saint Lucia on May 11-13, 2022, and this comes on the heels of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) report recommending the imposition of direct rule in the VI by the UK.

Mr Pierre said his country agrees with the OECS and elected representatives of the VI that the abolition of Parliament with direct rule from London represents a retrograde step in the evolution of the democratic process that is inconsistent with the United Nations Proclamation of Human Rights to be free of colonial rule.

“The UN Declaration on granting independence to colonial countries and peoples – Resolution 1514 of 1960 is an international commitment to which British is itself bound,” he added.

The Seminar was held under the theme ‘Advancement of the Non-Self Governing Territories through the Coronavirus disease pandemic,” and Pierre added that while neither the Governance status nor the political colours of their people mattered in the COVID-19 rampage, he said the pandemic would have made the process of decolonisation a tougher task.

Much work ahead - PM Pierre

"There is therefore much work ahead, some of it quite complex, if there is to be a successful decolonisation for the remaining non-self-governing territory. We can no longer afford the continued repetition of the process which finds continual reaffirmation of the mandate without accountability for implementation.”

Mr Pierre added that in the case of regional institutions, the United Nations has an important statutory role to play in the future development process of regional territories.

“The successful decolonisation of over 80 territories since World War II reflects the effectiveness of this historical role.”

He said the advancement in decolonisation was successful in large measure because of the adherence to the parameters of self-determination set forth by the United Nations General Assembly.

Sir, the people of the BVI care little about your country or your Citizens or any other country that makes up the OECS. They are regarded as "Island men/ women" and other discriminatory names. Where were the OECS when their citizens are treated like dirt here? Where are these voices when children who were born in the BVI to parents who are from these same countries are treated as inferior to those born of parents from here? Where were your voices when some of these children are given time where they were born and in some cases deported to your countries? Your voice is needed now because of an impending storm. Let the wind blow where it may.

Almost every OECS in the aribbean region believe that they have political legal over the UK, that they have veto power as to how the CoI recommendations should be done.
As far as many, and I know the BVI is an Overseas territory under the UK's rulership, not the OECS.
They, the OECS have not suffered under political leaders financial mismanagement tactics as we have. We the of the BVI must decide on the critical issue, not they nor the disunited UN at this time. They should first correct their own crookedness before pretending that they are able to dictate to us, the people of the BVI what we should or not should.
If the UK has already proven thar it is necessary to ruled directly, for a limited time, in order to help us achieved from bad to good governance, especially over financial mismanagement (political robberry), then so be it.

Just one correction The people of the OECS have suffered under corrupt Political leaders and financial mismanaging tactics more than the BVI. The problem is because they claimed to be independent countries and, unlike you, there is no one to hold them accountable so they continue to rob and mistreat their citizens sharing wealth and power with only their family, friends, and supporters while the others beg and run to countries like yours.. Stop believing their hypocritical talk. You are fortunate to have the Uk.

You people who are voting for the governor to rule. Do you know what you are doing? You better wake up and know what those people motives are. Stop being blinded by the corruption. When the UK rule, we will be like the AAmerican’s who are second class citizens in America. I know you are tired of our own, but UK rule is not an option. These people are cunning (UK). Stop looking at them like a savior! Jesus is our savior out of our captivity!!! REPENT from your wicked ways, then he’ll heal our land!

Hon. Pierre, thank you for your sentiments. Please know that the persons blogging above and below are not true BVIslanders, and if they are, they are either under 16 and lacks respect, and is unsure what love and kindness is. BVIslanders who have truly thought things true agrees that UK Rule is not the perfect solution for what presently ails us in the British Virgin Islands. I am praying for God fearing men and women to offer themselves as candidates for election and that the Governor will allow this process that is due in a few months time. I am praying that God is merciful. Hon. Fahie will have to answer for his sins and all of us for ours. A drastic change like sudden White Rule is never good for black societies anywhere in the world. We have toiled and built our country to what it is. We are not an island filled with drug dealers. The drug dealers are there like in every Nation in the world, but the majority works legal jobs and lives away from this type of ugliness that it has been revealed our Ex Premier has been practicing. Thank you for your offered support. Your prayers are welcomed.
