“Mathivated.” Is the mathivated equivalent to spellivated? My grandparents tell me that back in the day spelling was a subject but now he/they cannot spell C-A-T correctly. It must be hereditary, for I too cannot spell a lick. Spell check on my phone, iPad,,laptop, are my friends. They anticipate what they I want to say. Some of dem are stubborn, have own way and got to get with them. Lol. Math though is another wild animal. One can memorize history, geography, social studies, civics( is civics still taught?), etc. Math will mess you up if you try to memorize it; you have to grasp, understand, how to transposed formulas, etc.math is not a spectator sport, one has to be active in the game, working problems, etc . I’m likle better now than in school days. Can the students use pen and paper, slide rule, ball frame, basic calculator, phone, etc, in the competition? What is the response time to a question? Are questions just basic math, ie, basic geometry, algebra, arithmetic, calculus, trigonometry, new math ( whatever the hell that is), differential equations, etc. Any way congrats to St. George’s,and ETPS!! Some computer engineers, architects, Finance major in the making. Let’s add basic finance in the post primary and secondary curriculums. Finance is part of our daily lives, part of living, etc., but we learn finance the hard and costly way on the street. Let’s stay motivated, mathivated, financivated.

A massive congratulations to St. George’s Secondary Mental Math team for taking home the 1st place trophy in the Secondary Division! Watching them embrace the challenge, train relentlessly during their lunch breaks, and step onto that stage at HLSCC as a perfectly united front was one of the most inspiring experiences of my career as an educator.

To add to the joy, a huge shoutout to our St. George's Primary Division for securing an incredible 2nd place finish! What a monumental, historic week for the entire St. George's school family from primary through secondary! ????✨

A big congratulations as well to the Primary Division champions, Ebenezer Thomas Primary School, and to Francis Lettsome Primary School for their wonderful 3rd place achievement.

To echo Education Officer Ms. Callwood, all of these kids truly embody the word "mathivated"! As one of the commenters rightly pointed out, math is not a spectator sport. It requires deep conceptual understanding, lightning-fast reflexes, and incredible teamwork to solve complex problems completely mentally—without pen, paper, or calculators. These students proved to everyone that mathematics can be an infectious, joyful, and highly engaging experience.

Kudos also to Elmore Stoutt High School, Bregado Flax Educational Centre, Virgin Islands School for Technical Studies, Ciboney Centre for Excellence, and every single brilliant student across the territory who stepped up to participate in this inaugural event.

Seeing the youth of the Virgin Islands come together over these two days to celebrate S.T.E.A.M. and academic excellence is the greatest victory of all. Let's keep this amazing positive momentum going and all stay #Mathivated! ????????⚡????
