St George’s marches in celebration of Episcopal Schools Week
The students, along with teachers of the St George’s Primary and Secondary Schools, gathered to celebrate Episcopal Schools Week- an event that takes place annually around the world.
“We decided that we would do something different this year,” said Rev. Sandra Walters Malone in explaining the addition of the march component to the celebration.
She disclosed that there were four schools that participated from the Diocese of the Virgin Islands, including All Saints Cathedral School in St Thomas, USVI; St Mary’s in Virgin Gorda; as well as St George’s Primary and Secondary Schools.
The service and march for All Saints took place yesterday, October 9, 2013 in St Thomas.
Principal of St George’s Primary School, Ms Claudette A. Llandover explained that the march was also held in an effort to remind the community of the importance of the episcopal schools.
“For the Primary School, what we tried to depict was different aspects of school life, because many people view us as just mere academics,” Ms Llandover related. She said the school’s drama group, debate club, honour society, environment club, athletics groups and housing systems were all vividly displayed, along with the students in uniform.
“We are not just not merely an academic institution but we are trying to create holistic students so that when they are ready they are able to take their rightful place in society,” she added.
Commenting on the theme of the event, ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me’, Rev Malone expressed that the group felt it was one that gelled well with outreach.
“We sent letters to the parents and got the children to make small donations – a dollar or two dollars – to go towards a project that the young people of the church call ‘Operation Christmas Child’,” Rev. Malone explained.
Gifts were sent last year through the same exercise to children in Cameroon, West Africa and the group plans to do another international outreach this year as well.
According to Rev. Malone there will also be a partnership with the Social Development Department to do something with local children who are in need. An offering was taken earlier today in aid of this.
