ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – After what seems an eternity, sports explodes into action for 2012 with the return of Athletics, Football, Volleyball, Cricket, Rugby and Softball to the Calendar for January and beyond. There is also the the Triple Crown and it all kicks off from this weekend.

The Territory’s leading athletes who have spent the off season hard at training, will get their first run outs on Saturday January 14, when the BVI Athletics Association’s 2012 season kicks off at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds, with the first of five competitions in the Gatorade Development Series.

The Gatorade Development Series is a lead up to the March 10 BVI National Jr. Championships and Carifta Games trials.

Competition begins at 10:00 a.m. with the Long Jump, targeting Under 11 to open male and female athletes and the Shot Put from Under 15 through open male and female divisions. There will also be the Baseball Throw targeting Under 9-Under 13 competitors. Running events scheduled are the 1500m open followed by the 60m Hurdles and the Under 11 through open male and female divisions 400m.

Other Gatorade Series Development meets are scheduled for: January 28, February 11, February 25 and March 3.

Road running also hits the street with the expansion of racing in Virgin Gorda to include the inaugural VG Half Marathon to be held on May 12, 2012.

On January 21, the Dive BVI 5k Series starts in the Valley and on March 3 the Blenheim Trust 5k starts on Tortola at the A.O. Shirley Grounds Mondo Track.

Cricket starts its 2012 season with the WICB/Digicel Grassroots Programme taking place every Saturday from 1 p.m. until 3.30 p.m. on the grounds of HLSCC.

Under the auspices of the Cricket Academy, the programme is geared towards 11- 17 year old boys and girls of all abilities. Equipment is provided and registration is free.

Softball starts its junior leagues on Wednesday January 18.

The Matrix Foundation continues its Volleyball Development Programme at the Multi Purpose Sports Complex from Monday to Friday under the leadership of Jackie Weekes, who apart from being the Territory’s leading Coach has also been instrumental in the encouragement of Danielle Selkridge and Valissa Brathwaite to name but two.

Horse Racing makes history on January 15 with the first ever Triple Crown event starting at the Ellis Thomas Downs. A full Race card starts at 1 p.m.

Rugby continues its evening training programmes for men and women both on the AOS and also at Capoons Bay.

Basketball is covered by the new season of Books and Basketball run by the Hoop It Up Foundation on Monday January 16.

Books and Basketball started in January 2011 giving hundreds of children the opportunity to develop basketball skills while improving academics after school. The camp is consist of two days of basketball training (Tuesdays & Thursdays) and two days of academic tutoring (Mondays & Wednesday), there will also be a bus service available to transport the campers from their school to the camp location, and from the camp location to their homes. The basketball will be conducted at Multi-purpose complex and the tutoring will be conducted at the Althea Scatliffe primary school. In Virgin Gorda basketball will be conducted for Robinson O'Neal at North Sound basketball court on Mondays and for Breacado flax at the Jefery Caines basketball court on Wednesdays, tutoring will be conducted at their respective schools on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Future Star Basketball Camp is open to all high school basketball players who are seriously interested in basketball. The camp consist of two days of weight training (Mondays & Wednesdays), two days of basketball training (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and study hall on Fridays. This camp is design to create future national athletes, college athletes, and possible professional athletes.

All these camps are free of charge, and they are available to both private and public schools.
