Spooners Estate still viable option for new elderly home

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Spooners Estate is still a viable option for the newly elected Government to construct a home for the elderly, revealed Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon. Ronnie Skelton.

During the campaign trail, Hon. Skelton spoke passionately about the senior citizens and the conditions of the existing home.

And now that he’s in a position to do something about it, the Minister told Virgin Islands News Online that he is going to fix the situation.

“With the help of my colleagues and the Cabinet and I know they are passionate about it just like I am, we are going to fix it. We are going to look at the Spooners Home, but all of this hinges on what I find in terms of finances,” Minister Skelton said on November 9, 2011 at Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall.

However, he quickly added, “We have to take care of our immediate needs now so we are going to try to do things that are quick, medium term, and long term, we’re going to plan.”

Throughout the 2011 election campaign, the NDP team pointed out that a modern facility is needed where seniors can receive proper care in their golden years, adding it’s a shame that the new seniors citizens’ home was not built by the previous administration, the Virgin Islands Party, since the NDP laid the groundwork before they left office in 2007.

Why don't you take her in and take care of her or hire someone to do that at home. Too many of us throw our elders in this homewhile we take over their house, finances and property. Shame on all those who have done this. What happen to the days when children would take of elderly persons in their homes. all of a sudden our culture and respect for ur elders have gone through the door. I am quite willing to take in my parents when they have reached the age that they can't do things for themselves after all the things they have done for me throughout my life.

You said "back in the days" well my guess is, i may be wrong but back in those days most women were home, but now in these days women have a house to run (by herself despite a man being there, if there's one), raise the child/ren also by themselves whether a man is there or not, work a 40 hrs a week if not more, and the bills are higher than the pay, sooooo tell me what kind of care could someone actually get? Those who could should but bare in mind they are the minority.

i personally feel that the seniors need not to be moving at spooner's for out there is a very cold place and if you put them there some of them will catch nemonia and die faster. if the ndp had so much care for them like they claim then they would think twice. do that NDP to those seniors and god will deal with you all like he has to deal with archie in his time. just do it and you all will answer to god and their children when they realy find the true cause of their parents death.
