DUFF'S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- Back for its 18th year, the New Life Baptist Church in Duff’s Bottom, Tortola yesterday, December 3, 2023, held its ‘Unsung Heroes’ Ceremony in recognition of persons in the [British] Virgin Islands (VI) who have contributed greatly to the community.

Described as not just a tradition, church officials said the service is part of celebrating each other and was started by then-senior pastor John I. Cline.

This year’s honourees were the late Edwin A. George and Nidia George, along with musician and school teacher Andre E.L. Braithwaite.

The 'Unsung Heroes' Ceremony recognises persons from within the VI community who have not always or not been publicly acknowledged by a collective people for their accomplishments and the silent roles they play in the community.

Speedy's founders recognised

“These are persons who have given and continue to give selflessly of themselves to help others and who seek nothing in return but to simply inspire, encourage, and help where they can,” church officials said.

Mrs Marieta C. Flax-Headley, in recognising Speedy’s founders Edwin and Nidia George, described the company as a pioneer in the ferry service industry in the VI with their fleet of boats. The award was collected by the grandchildren of the late couple.

Camille George, who gave a brief speech on behalf of her siblings Steve, Corinne, and Coralie, said her parents would have been honoured to accept the recognition. “On behalf of my siblings and I and our amazing staff and the entire BVI community, with pleasure, we accept this award,” she said.

Meanwhile, Andre E.L. Braithwaite was also recognised for his community services in the VI and as a renowned musician and multi-instrumentalist, teacher, and performer who has contributed greatly to music in the VI.

Mr Braithwaite was also recognised for his ability to connect with youths and as a businessman committed to teaching youths the art and skill of music.

Past honourees include teachers, legislators, historians, lawyers, local authors, entrepreneurs, doctors, athletes, broadcasters, and persons of other notable professions in the VI.

So happy to see Edwin and Nidia George honored for their sterling contributions, not just to Virgin Gorda but to the entire Virgin Islands. They were humble, kind, loving, selfless, generous and wonderful people. So sorry they are not around to receive this award. They have set the bar high and I’m praying that their legacy goes on for many, many years.
