‘Speed & culture’ to be celebrated @ Carnival Races in STT on May 1
While the racecard has not yet been announced, horse racing fans can expect “a family-friendly day that celebrates speed and culture,” Chief Operating Officer of Southland Gaming VI, Shaine A. Gaspard, told Virgin Islands News Online.
Mr Gaspard said the Carnival Races in St Thomas are a main event on the Carnival calendar, where jockeys, trainers, and the horses showcase their talents.
“It brings together competitive racing, local energy, and a strong sense of community. We’re continuing to build on each race day to make the experience better for fans.”
Gates will open at 11:00 AM, and patrons will be eager to experience the most anticipated race of Carnival season, the Governor’s Cup, the ultimate inter-island showdown.
Ghostinyou of Tortola took the crown in dramatic fashion in 2024, while Floki’s Flight of St Thomas won it in 2025.
‘Solid turnout & real enthusiasm’
Meanwhile, Mr Gaspard has hailed the overwhelming support for horse racing since the redevelopment of Clinton E. Phipps Sr Racetrack.
“The support has been strong across the greater Virgin Islands community. Since returning to the redeveloped track, we’ve seen solid turnout and real enthusiasm from both longtime fans and new visitors.”
‘The surface is safe’
Additionally, Mr Gaspard said an independent track expert has inspected the surface and has given excellent reviews.
“His assessment was that the track is in much better condition than anticipated, which aligns with what many have said—that the surface is safe. He further noted that the track was not the cause of past incidents.
“We’re focused on maintaining that high standard while continuing to build momentum with each race day,” Gaspard said.
