BOSTON, Massachusetts, USA- Massachusetts-based judge, Mr Asha Z. White, whose mother is from the Virgin Islands (VI), has been nominated to sit as an Associate Judge of the Superior Court of Massachusetts.

His mother, Janet Smith, is from Carrot Bay in Tortola. Judge White has a Bachelor of Arts from Boston College and a Juris Doctor from Northeastern University School of Law.

Governor Maura Healey nominated Judge White for the position on May 14, 2025. 

The Massachusetts Governor's Council: Judicial Hearing and Assembly took place yesterday, Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at the Governor’s Council Chamber. 

‘The model every judge should go by’- Hon Terrence W. Kennedy

Hon Terrence W. Kennedy, who presided over the hearing following testimony from witnesses, and Mr White said, “You are the model every judge should go by from the Juvenile Court to the SJC. You have a perfect temperament on the bench… You’re going to be perfect in Superior Court.”

Hon Kennedy added that while Judge White will be missed in the District Court and sees his transition as a loss to the District Court, he will be a “great addition” to the Superior Court. 

“I’m going to miss you,” Hon Kennedy added. 

Vast legal background

Among the many positions held, Judge White, a Melford resident, worked as both a prosecutor and a defence attorney in the Boston Municipal Court, the District Court and the Superior Court from 2004 to 2021. He served as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Bureau of the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office from 2021 to 2024. 

He was appointed as an Associate Justice to the District Court in 2021 and has served as the First Justice of the Woburn District Court since July 2024.

From 2004 to 2021, he gained vast trial experience working as both a prosecutor and a defence attorney in the Boston Municipal Court, the District Court and the Superior Court. From 2020-2021, he served as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Bureau of the

He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at Suffolk University since 2008; he is a former President of the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association and has been a member of several trial court committees.

The official announcement and swearing ceremony are scheduled for May 28, 2025.

    Congratulations to him. It’s good to see a black man on top. If he was not in the news would you know him? Has the man EVER visited here? BVI only recognizes people that the world pays attention to. There are people right here doing so much for their community and they can’t get 5 minutes. Strupes.
