SOL photo display highlights 40th Anniversary of BVIAA-IAAF affiliation
The BVIAA became an IAAF member in March 1972 paving the way for the territory’s athletes to compete in regional and international competitions and for the organization to host the same.
During the weekend Leeward Islands Jr. Championships, Minister of Sports Hon. Myron Walwyn, At Large Representative and former athlete Archie Christian and BVI Athletics Foundation President Anthea Smith—also a former athlete—witness the display following the opening ceremony.
Former association president Johnny Hassan, current and former athletes, Olympians and fans, have gone down memory lane looking at photos of athletes who have represented the territory in regional and international competition over the years.
BVI Athletics Association officials sincerely thank Sol Country Manager Deborah Benjamin who whole heartedly got behind the project idea.
Black and white photos from yester year, photos of Olympians, athletes in competition and different national teams are on permanent display at the Pavilion at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. When the new facility is completed, the Sol display will be housed in the lounge.
While the project is a work in progress, photos of National Record holders will be added to the display among others.Photos of past and current officials who have been involved in the association are among those in the Sol display under the theme “Celebrating 40 years of international competition.”
The Leeward Islands Jr. Championships in which 17 meet records as well as National and All Comers Records were established, was the highlight of the BVIAA-IAAF 40 year affiliation.
