SPANISH TOWN, Virgin Gorda, VI- The Department of Waste Management (DWM) is hoping to have the fire at the Virgin Gorda dumpsite completely under control by the end of today, Monday, September 28, 2026.

A fire at the dump site was noticed on Saturday, September 26, 2026, and residents were urged to remain indoors as a result.

“We ran out of dirt last night, so we were not able to cap off the end, which was the source of the fire, the belly of it,” The Director of the Department of Waste Management (DWM), Brian A. Davis, said in the update.

Small pockets of smoke being addressed

He said there are still pockets of smoke and little fires in between.

“So, this morning, we’re going to get some dirt, place it here, trap and seal everything completely, [it] shouldn’t have any more smoke in this area.”

Davis said there is another small pocket on the upper ledge that will be dealt with similarly.

The department, he added, is working to get the situation at the dumpsite under control “before the day ends, God willing”.
