BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Host of Honestly Speaking, Pastor Claude O. Skelton-Cline, has accused white United Kingdom (UK) nationals and billionaires residing in the Virgin Islands (VI) of not doing more to help in the advancement of the VI.

His show on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, was titled, ‘You are accepting less than you deserve…So shift’, where, as usual, he opined on several international, regional and local issues.

Addressing his “white brothers and sisters”, Skelton-Cline said, “Most of you mean well for these Virgin Islands, but y’all are not helping, you’re not playing your role in assisting the Virgin Islands in its economic and political advancement.”

He said while most are well-meaning, they do not use their voice, influence or resources to help the Virgin Islands.

Billionaires with influence, but don’t help

Skelton-Cline added that there are billionaires residing across the sister islands, who help in ways that help themselves, giving token but not really helping the wider VI.

There is no public record of exactly how many billionaires are residing in the VI currently; however, Skelton-Cline is known to not shy away from opining on topics he believes are of importance.

“There are those of you who have access, inside of parliament, with prime ministers, with Lords, inside Kensington, but you’re not helping, and you can help, you can do a better job. Some of you are living your best lives in the Virgin Islands,” he accused.

Uggghhh...So, which ones are you talking about , Mr. Skelton?

Names, businesses owned, and personal finances accounted for-enquiring minds, would love to know!

As ausar points out, to whom are you referring? More to the point, precisely what are they supposed to DO? Interesting that you're calling out people who in fact by their mere investment and presence here, provide economic stimulation.

Conversely, what about the Bank of Asia scandal or the $20 million salary error for 2024 increases - neither of which get a lot of press, and clearly no mention from you? Are those financial monstrosities the fault of "resident White billionaires?"

And while you're at it, why not call out the HOA for its stubborn insistence on concealing the KPMG business case for the proposed airport expansion? Why does the public not have a right to know?

Pastor Skelton-Cline is basically calling people out. He’s saying that some wealthy UK residents in the Virgin Islands enjoy living here but don’t do enough to actually help the country move forward. His point is that having money, access, and influence should come with some responsibility, especially if you benefit so much from the place.
That said, the message could rub people the wrong way. Not everyone with money or foreign connections has the same power or desire to get involved in politics. Still, he’s raising a clear question: if you love living in the Virgin Islands and get a lot from it, shouldn’t you be doing more than just giving token help? Even if people don’t like how he said it, the issue he raised is one many locals think about but don’t always say out loud.

What specifically are these Billioinaires supposed to do?
      • Real Talk 284 (02/04/2026, 08:07) Like (0) Dislike (2) Reply
The point isn’t to single anyone out or demand extraordinary actions. It’s simply to suggest that those who have significant resources, influence, and access especially while choosing to live in the Virgin Islands may have opportunities to contribute more meaningfully. This could include quietly advocating for fair treatment of the Territory, supporting initiatives that build local capacity, or lending their voices and experience where it can make a positive difference. Even small, consistent efforts can have a lasting impact.

How many rich Virgin Islanders living in the UK are doing anything at all to help in the advancement of the UK?
      • Real Talk 284 (02/04/2026, 08:11) Like (4) Dislike (0) Reply
Funny how no one complains about rich Virgin Islanders in the UK not advancing Britain, but suddenly everyone expects foreigners here to be champion freedom fighters and economic saviors. Interesting standard.

False naratives christian preacher, so-call, you spend too much time talking. For that and other reasons, you don't give yourself time to listen to others. That is the main reason that your are wrong in your judgments so often.
Why are you so unhappy? Is it that because you are not now a billionaire, and may never become one? But what what if you become one, I doubt that, would you do any better? I doubt that, too. Give your mouth a rest , sir.

This man, and many others, we sit or go to bed thinking about all those people we wouldn't imagine have a lot of money and property. That's being selfish and envious. What do you know about whether they have it or not? Sometimes we imagine that everyone with white skin is a millionaire—a big mistake. Maybe I thought that in my youth, and I came to that conclusion because I experienced it firsthand. It's not like that. Sir, dedicate yourself to something else. Let's all join a campaign to clean the streets of BVI. We're all going to make BVI a better place and stop depending on others.

He's not a little man. He has good height on him. I do think, for a Preacher, he is too mixed up in preaching politics and not enough about saving souls to enter the Kingdom of God. I don't feel the spiritual leader in him, but always full of anger. He should keep politics away from his church, because it doesn't calm the nerves and minds of his parishioners, who are looking for spiritual guidance.

Not just about billionaires— there many civic-minded expats with deep expertise across multiple fields who could genuinely help move the territory forward. But their hesitation is understandable. No one wants to step in and be accused of trying to take over, or worse, of some modern form of colonialism.. Many of these individuals come from traditions of voluntarism. They would gladly contribute their time, insight, and experience to help build something meaningful here. In fact, many already do—but often quietly, indirectly, by proxy, precisely to avoid the backlash.
There’s a certain mindset—Hon. Kedrick Pickering alluded to this as hubris in a piece he wrote a few months back —that treats outside advice, especially from expats, as something to be resisted. It gets framed as confidence, but often it’s just insecurity . We act as if accepting input somehow diminishes us.
Meanwhile, the irony is glaring. Economies in the developing countries and The Middle East—operating at scales we’re nowhere near—routinely bring in outside expertise to guide development. They don’t see it as weakness; they see it as smart.
But here’s the real miss: we’re sitting with access to some of the most capable minds in the world, and our primary ask is…....money Thats short-term thinking. It’s the cliche of give a man a fish feed him for a day vs teach a man to fish and feed him for life . People spend thousands just to hear these individuals speak, to gain a fraction of their thinking. We have that access practically for free —and don’t even think to ask for it.
We want the cheque, but not the counsel. And that’s the problem.

This position comes across as two tongued. On one hand, you routinely chastise expatriates for “interfering” in Virgin Islands affairs. On the other, you now rebuke them for not inserting themselves more deeply into the Territory’s economic and political advancement.
Most striking is how conveniently the expatriate population is being partitioned into categories that suit the argument of the day. It feels less like a principled stance and more like selective outrage deployed for personal aggrandizement.

Who are funding and co-founding a large proportion of local NPOs that are doing work to support the economy, the environment, the entrepreneurs, the youth? There are a few billionaires in that group so he talking nonsense. Can they do more? Of course, but to say they doing nothing is not true.

And the government is not helping by slowing down projects or tunring down offers of serious funding to assist with significant public interest projects....

    Sir,
Those people you are referring to are the same island people (meaning not from here) that are pretty much not appreciated but now you want their money. Don't be a hypocrite sir, and so you know I was born right here but I don't like the appreciation for people not from here.

You don't have as much as those people you are talking about, but you have a business that I don't recall seeing in the media giving out as much as a slice of cheese pizza so please close that hole under your nose until you also look in the mirror.
